This is step by step on how to create your own community in Steemit.
First, click on steemit logo at your left side on the screen then scroll down until you see Explore communities.. then click on that Explore communities
Then at the top on your right side there is Create a community tab, click on it then it will bring you to the next page.
On this next screen page, you will have to fill in your new community name and some description of your new community on the blank boxes. Then click "next"
There will be owner name and password generated and you will have to keep this information as you will need this information to log in to your community later. Then click the "create a community" tab.
On the next page you will have to pay 3 STEEM a fees for creating your community.
Make the payment then your community is created. You will be an admin of the community by default.
Your community is created. Congratulations! 😃
You will have to login using the owner name and the password in order for you to edit the roles in your community, for example, if you want to add another steem user as an admin in the community that you just have created.

Btw, just a tip for everyone reading.
3 STEEM to create a Community, which is about $0.45 right now. When STEEM is $1.00 each, that will be $3.00, so it will get more expensive to start a community as Steemit grows back.

Some of the benefits are, you can control who you want to be in your community, you make the rules and if your community is active and have some specific niche, you can monetize your community too for the advertisers of some products that your community member might be interested in. We cannot rely on reward pools/upvotes/curations solely for our income on Steemit.

You should promoting your community and see if other users will interested to join, make a post about what is your community is about and if possible please not make it look spammy. verification on newcomers community is suffice.

Hi @breeze.com welcome back 😃 my suggestion for growing your SP(if you will not spend money for growing SP) is if you have to find a way to serve the community with your skills or what you're good at. Then delegate this SP to the community that you're actively involved with.
For community building, is for you to find the niche for the community that you want to grow here. Make sure it's unique and you will be having a lot of active posters or people that will be writing for the community even if they did not get high upvotes all the time. You have to prepare your own SP to support the community members too and have a plan on how to grow it over time.
