in hive-172186 •  4 years ago  (edited)

It has really be amazing since I joined this community. I am really elated to have completed my achievements 1 and 2, so behold my achievement 3.

In this achievement 3, the task is on Content Etiquette and my focus is to elucidate what Plagiarism is all about.

But before i do that, I wluld love to give little explanation on what Etiquette and Content Etiquette entails.

What is Etiquette?

A quick definition from the Cambridge dictionary has this to say......

"the set of rules or customs that control accepted behaviour in particular social groups or social situations"source

Is the ethics or set of behavioral pattern that is expected from a blog writer when writing especially when quoting and sharing ideas and pictures from a source rather than his.

The writer needs to ensure that he gives credit to the the original owner of the write up used, mention the link on the website or blog and mention the name of the author properly.

What is Plagiarism?

This has become a serious challenge in our modern days technological advancement. Many a people have fallen victim to Plagiarism unknowingly. This task has been able to unveil to me more about this challenge in our world today.

Plagiarism is the act of appropraiting or attributing someone else work, without any intention of giving them credit or acknowledgement for their work. It I always confirmed that the aim of plagiarism is to make it seem as if the are the original source of the work, be it text or image.

From the research guides.blogspot.com defines plagiarism as "the wrongful appropriation" and "stealing and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the representation of them as one's own original work.source

Therefore, i can start categorically that plagiarism is the deliberate or accidental refusal of someone acknowledging or attributing credit to an authors writing.

Common Types of Plagiarism

  1. Direct Plagiarism: "Is the word for word transcription of a section of someone else's work, will attribution and without quotation"source

  2. Self Plagiarism: " Occurs when a student submits his or her own previous work, or mixes parts of previous works, without permission from all professors involved"source

  3. Accidental Plagiarism: " Occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution"source

  4. Complete Plagiarism: " This type of plagiarism occurs when someone takes the work of another person and submit it under his own name"source

  5. Source-based Plagiarism: "plagiarism may occur because of the different types of sources. For example, when a researcher reference a source that is incorrect or does not exist, it is a misleading citation. Plagiarism also occurs when a researcher uses a secondary sources of data or information, but only cites the primary source of information"source

  6. Paraphrasing Plagiarism: It involves the use of someone else's writing with some minor changes in the sentences and using it as one's own. Even if the words differ, the original idea remains the same and plagiarism occurs"source

  7. Inaccurate Authorship: " Inaccurate authorship or misleading attribution can happen in two ways: In one form, when an individual contributes to a manuscript but does not get credit for it.the second form is the opposite: when an individual gets credit without contributing to the work"source

  8. Mosaic Plagiarism: "It involves using part of someone else's work and adding your own work to it. This includes "copy/past" and "find and replace" plagiarism, where you replace certain worda or sections with paraphrased work in an attempt to make it unique"

How to avoid plagiarism

  1. Acknowledge: Give credit correctly citing sources whenever you use someone else's thoughts or ideas

  2. Quotations: place all direct quotes inside quotation marks

  3. Paraphrase: put someone else's ideas in your own words while still giving proper credit.

Indeed this task has educated me on how to avoid plagiarism, hence "I have read and understood the steemit etiquette on steemit community and will do my best to embrace them" at the end of this task post.
