Security of users is at the heart of the Steemit platform. Owing to the inefficiency of passwords, the Steemit platform which is built on a blockchain adopted a different approach to security which is the use of keys. These keys, usually referred to as the “5-Given Keys” are at the heart of all operations done on the steemit platform. Here is my understanding of Security on Steemit. Welcome to my Achievement 2 Task. Once again, I am @iamchukwudi. Let’s get started!

Question 1: Have you retrieved all your keys on steemit?

I retrieved all my keys as soon as they were presented to me on Sign up into the Steemit platform.
Steemit as a platform is very intentional with the 5-given keys. Thus, a newly registered user is usually presented with his/her keys at the initial stage of registration, and this presents the user with no option other than retrieving their keys and safely storing them.

Question 2: Do you know each of these key functions and restrictions?

The 5-given keys are different keys with different purposes. Thus, a key could be used to unlock opportunities not possible with other keys as these keys have different functions and are restricted to different activities on the Steemit platform.
Here are the keys, their functions and restrictions:

KeyFunctionsRestrictions
Private posting keyAs its name implies, this key is what is required for the social media function of the Steemit platform, activities such as posting, commenting and voting could be performed by logging in with this keyThis key is limited as it cannot be used to perform money-related activities.
Active keyThis is a special and sensitive key for monetary actions on Steemit. This key is required for activities such as token transfer and exchangesDue to the sensitive nature of this key, it may not be allowed for normal social activities.
Owner keyThe owner key is the most important key on the Steemit platform, as it helps a user gains complete control over his account. This key is required to recover a compromised account and to change other keysThis key is a highly sensitive one and only used when necessary
Memo keySteemit is a social media platform built on the blockchain. Usually, social media platforms have a private messaging feature, but this is lacking on Steemit for now. The memo key is required to decrypt and encrypt private messages on Steemit whenever private messaging becomes availableThis key is a basic key limited to private messaging
Public keysThese are a group of keys visible to the public and associated with a user’s usernameThese keys are not required for any major operation on Steemit and do not need to be stored safely

There are other keys that should be kept safely:
TRON Account Private Key: This key is available in the PDF file generated on account creation. This key is used in performing TRON-related transactions.
Master password: This is the first password provided on registration, this key could be used to generate the .PDF file that contains other keys. This key must be handled with extreme care.

Question 3: How do you plan to keep your master password?

Here are different ways I intend to keep my master password safe and protected.

  1. I printed a copy of the .PDF document and saved it with my academic documents.
  2. I saved a copy of the master password in a personal safe.
I have chosen an offline method as the likelihood of compromise is very low.

Question 4: Do you know how to transfer your steem token to another steem user account?

Transferring Steem token to other Steem users.
Here is a step by step procedure on how to transfer steem tokens
First, after logging in, visit the wallet section.

wallet 1.png

This should take you to https://steemitwallet.com/@iamchukwudi (your username). On this page, details of your wallet balance.

You should ideally log into your steemit wallet using your private posting key or private active key.
Next, click on the little dropdown on the STEEM column to reveal different possible operations. Here, the option to “Transfer” STEEM is presented.

This action next reveals the transfer window where the user is then required to specify the user’s username who is to receive the STEEM and then input the amount to send and select the Steemit currency in which funds are being transferred (either STEEM or SBD). The user may want to leave a message to the recipient by entering a message on the memo session.

Question 5: Do you know how to power up your STEEM?

There are several ways to Power up ones STEEM.
A direct Power up could be achieved by converting STEEM to STEEM POWER (SP) from the wallet section. Simply visit the wallet and select the Power up option from the STEEM column, shown below.

This reveals the Power Up dialogue which allows a user to convert their STEEM to STEEM POWER shown below.

A user can also have other users transfer STEEM to them, or purchase STEEM online from exchanges and have it transferred to their Steemit account and use the STEEM to Power Up as shown above.
An indirect way of Powering Up (or increasing one’s Steem Power) is by being active on the Steemit platform through engaging in contests, carrying out tasks, engaging and generally being an active Steemit user.
