Hello there! Fellow steemers.
Today I be taking you through my third achievement which borders on content etiquette. The goal of this achievement is to show that, I have a solid understanding of what original content is and plagiarism. To fully cover this, I've broken it down into the following subtopics - for easy understanding:
- Plagiarism;
- Proof of Brain Concept;
- How to Cite a Source
- Steemit Community Etiquette
So, stay with me as I take you through this important topic.
What Exactly is Plagiarism?
According to the University of Oxford:
Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. source
All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition. Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional. Under the regulations for examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offence. source
Simply put, plagiarism is appropriating or passing off the writing works or ideas of others as an original idea of yours without crediting the idea to them.
Proof of Brain Concept
This concept is the driving force behind the Steemit platform because the Steemit blockchain rewards you for producing original content on your posts. And you are rewarded through the upvotes. This is why the originality of the content you post on Steemit is important.
However, there are instances where we need to cited other sources of inspiration. This is why we as Steemit users need to credit the sources where we find our information. Anything short that would amount to plagiarism; thereby, contradicting the proof of brain concept of Steemit.
How to Cite a Source Properly on Steemit
The rules concerning citing sources on Steemit are quite different from the conventional means. It is not enough that you should simply mention where the text is from e.g., According to Wikipedia. You are required to include the direct link to that page where you got the information. Also, every cited text must be in quotation marks or formatted using the > symbol before the text.
This also applies to the use of images that are not owned by you. Be sure to insert a direct link to the site you found the image used at the bottom of the image. As shown below:

Steemit Community Etiquette
It is important for a community like ours to ensure that plagiarism is checked and discouraged. As a writer myself, I would not like to see my works being paraded by some other user as their own. It is an intellectual rip off.
For this reason, I find this achievement personal and I will take it seriously. By ensuring all by contents on and off this platform would be checked for unintentional plagiarism. Also, make sure that all borrowed sources are cited properly. So that each creator is giving their full credit for their intellectual property.
