Content Etiquette on Steemit

Etiquette

“Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have the right to do and what is right to do.”

According to Potter Stewart

Content Etiquettes on Steemit are those standards set by steemit indicating both acceptable and unacceptable post content and behaviours.

One among the most unacceptable behavior on steemit is Plagiarism.

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Plagiarism is defined by Wikipedia as "...the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work..." Without giving any credit to the original owner through some form of proper citation.
Source

Plagiarism is a form of stealing that involves the theft of intellectual property. It is committed when a person presents another persons literary or artistic work as though it was theirs without giving the real owner any recognition or credit through proper citation.

What can be Plagiarised

Plagiarism is not limited to literary work, it covers a wide range of intellectual property like:

  • Delivered speeches
  • Quotes
  • Documents
  • Pictures
  • Audio Recordings
  • Videos and a lot more. It covers ideas that have not been patented or protected by any copyright laws.

Types of plagiarism

  • Complete Plagiarism
This form of plagiarism involves the presenting of the whole material often in its pirated form by another person who is not the true author of the material. Making profits from such materials is a form of Complete Plagiarism a high form of academic dishonesty and often attracts serious academic sanctions.

  • Paraphrasing Plagiarism
Paraphrasing Plagiarism is a very common form of plagiarism where the text copied from its original author is reorganized to avoid detection. Sentences are being rephrase and words are substituted with their synonyms making it a little more difficult to detect.

  • Self-plagiarism
In this case, the owner of the material publishes his work more than once. Getting credit for the same work a second time. Whole or part of a previous work can be Plagiarised.

  • Accidental plagiarism
Accidental plagiarism happens if a person makes an error while referencing a material. Or making a mistake in the citation.

How To Avoid Plagiarism

Avoiding plagiarism is possible if we write our own ideas. It can also be avoided if when reading for inspiration, we pen down main points and latter develop the points using our own understanding of the topic.
When using other people's work is unavoidable, making proper quotation and citation thereby recognizing the original owner will keep us from being guilty of plagiarism.
