Hello my lovely family of Steemians. I welcome you all to my achievement 3 post at newcomers community. |
---|
I stopped doing my Achievement tasks for a while now so I want to complete all of them and get verified fully.
Today task is all about content etiquette and am asked to write about "what is plagiarism?". Let's go straight to the point.
In my terms; plagiarism is the act of using someone else's idea or work without giving them credit them. Using someone else's idea and making it look like your own.
From Wikipedia article about plagiarism
Plagiarism is the representation of another person's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work. Although precise definitions vary depending on the institution, in many countries and cultures plagiarism is considered a violation of academic integrity and journalistic ethics, as well as social norms around learning, teaching, research, fairness, respect, and responsibility. As such, a person or entity that is determined to have committed plagiarism is often subject to various punishments or sanctions, such as suspension, expulsion from school or work, fines, imprisonment, and other penalties." Plagiarism contains the danger of having your content flagged and also faced with copyright claim.
Types of plagiarism. |
---|
Here are a few types of plagiarism listed below;
Direct plagiarism: This is the type of plagiarism where a person copy-paste someone else idea or work without giving them credit. This is the obvious type of plagiarism and it can be easily spotted.
Mosaic Plagiarism: In this kind of plagiarism the person tries to change a few words, paraphrase, or rearrange some sentences, but the main idea is still the same. Paraphrasing someone else idea without giving them credit.
Source-based plagiarism: This is when you cite sources incorrectly or do not include all the necessary information.
Self-plagiarism: This is when you reuse your work or idea without giving yourself credit. For instance, submitting the same assignment (essay) in two different classes. This can be considered plagiarism too.
Accidental plagiarism: This kind of plagiarism happens when you unintentionally forget to cite a source or maybe don't realize you are plagiarizing. This is why there's a need to be careful about where and how you get your ideas while writing, etc.
Causes of plagiarism |
---|
Here are a few reasons of mine why people plagiarize.
Laziness: Laziness is the number one reason I could say people plagiarize, because someone might not want to put in the effort to do research and study they tend to steal from others.
Pressure: The desire or demand to produce high-quality work can cause someone to Plagiarize. This can make someone go the extra mile.
Confusion: In this case, people can accidentally Plagiarize because they don't know how to use sources properly or how to avoid self-plagiarism.
Entitlement: Some people might feel they're entitled to use other people's work because they think it belongs to everyone, and it might be that they don't value the originality of the work.

Hi @juliusinimotimi
For your achievement 3, it is important that you develop the topic in your own words. And that you differentiate the text that is a quote from the rest of the text of your authorship.
