WHAT IS PLAGIARISM ?
This refers to the coping of another person's work or part of work, be it a write-up, image, video etc and making use of such in our work without according credit to the main author of such work.
Another type of plagiarism is the use of our previous works without proper source, students mostly fall victim to this.
Works when properly referenced or sourced will not amount to plagiarism. Take for example, I took out the below image from tradingview.com
As you may notice, I gave the source below the image, with such I showed where I obtained the image from and as well gave credit to the author.
Another example is as seen below.
"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." -Nelson Mandela
Take it or leave it, it amounts to stealing when we take what does not ordinarily belong to us and claim it. Whereas some may think it to be smartness, the truth is that stealing is stealing.
TYPES OF PLAGIARISM.
There may be up to seven types of plagiarism, here I want to mention four.
Direct plagiarism. This refers to the directly cupying a work of another without quotation marks and no credit attributed to the owner of the work.
Mosaic Plagiarism refers to the use of word spin or substituting a copied work with synonyms while the main structure of the work is maintained.
Accidental Plagiarism. This kind of plagiarism occurs due to mistake on the part of the writer. He may forget to add a source or quotation mark. He did not ordinarily intend to plagiarize the content but just made an omission.
Source-based plagiarism.
This type of plagiarism results due to wrong sourcing or omission of source. For example, a writer may make a mistake in adding an entirely different source order than where the material is drawn from. Another example is omission of a source: If there were two or more references used in an article and one is sourced leaving the rest, it results to such Plagiarism.
HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM.
1• Ensure originality. Always do your own work . While research is important, ensure to write in your own words. If a phrase or image or anything must be copied or quoted, always use quotation marks, and properly reference the copied parts.
2• Avoid the use of word spins or some article rewrites.
3• Use plagiarism checker. When a topic maybe researched by many, there may be possiblity that our definition or some ideas or phrases may be same with another, plagiarism checker may help you know if another has written something similar.
Avoiding plagiarism is particular for #steemit users due to it's "proof of brain" model. For a newbie, it means writing from your head or creating your personal and original contents. If it were not so, it means working against the platform.
