- I have embraced the existing Steem community etiquette.
• What is Plagiarism?
"Copying of another person's ideas, text or other creative work, and presenting it as one's own, especially without permission; plagiarizing.Even if it's not illegal, plagiarism is usually frowned upon." - wiktionary
The Oxford dictionary explains Plagiarism as; "to copy another person's ideas, words or work and pretend that they are your own."
div class= center>source
Copying someone's work without due permission or giving credit to the owner is plagiarism. This is an act of fraud.
Sometimes, plagiarising isn't done entirely on purpose, this happens when a writer unintentionally paraphrases a source, using thee same words or sentences. But this is still plagiarism.
Since Steem is an open platform, it allows users post whatever they want provided their contents are legal and complies with Steem's terms of service.
Sometimes when writing an article or coming up with a content, we might need help from other sources; a piece of quote, pictures, a line or a phrase that doesn't legally belong to the person writing the article but it helps in shedding more light on the content written.
• What do you do to avoid plagiarising?
✓ Use Your Own Words
Try as much as possible to make every word in your articles uniquely yours. Come up with your own ideas from a whole new perspective.
✓ Cite Your Source - Give Due Credit.
In your written article, when adding a piece that isn't yours, add a citation that gives credit to the owner, indentfying the source. The site you got it from and possibly the name of the original owner.
✓ Include Quote Marks
Using quotation marks to show that the text used aren't yours is a good way to avoid Plagiarism and this is quite easier. You should also cite the source used to make reference.
✓ Paraphrase
Rewriting the ideas of others using your own words but without changing the meaning. This isn't highly recommend as it could still pass as Plagiarism. To successfully paraphrase, you will have to use your own words, try interpreting the information in another way but in a way that your text and the text you're paraphrasing still have the same meaning.
• Citing a source
Citing a source is to add a link that will direct readers to the source of the original text or content. This would make your article more credible and structured, provided it is cited correctly.
Your sources could be from multiple places and you'll have to cite each and every one of them. The sources have to be true and informative. By doing this you are sure that you are not plagiarising anyone, remember to quote the text and to cite the source.
But in all, creating your own unique words, articles, quotes or contents is a much better step in avoiding plagiarism.
• Content Etiquette
Etiquette according to the Oxford dictionary, "are the formal rules of correct or polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession."
"The forms required by good breeding, or prescribed by authority, to be observed in social or official life; observance of the proprieties of rank and occasion; conventional decorum; ceremonial code of polite society." - wiktionary
Steemit frowns upon plagiarism, so following the community's rules and regulations will ensure that the etiquettes of the society are kept and upholded amongst users. Plagiarism is an offence that attracts due punishments.
