WHAT IS PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism means using someone else’s words or ideas without giving proper credit to the owner of the idea. Sometimes plagiarism involves intentionally stealing someone else work and claim it to be your own work.

Types of Plagiarism.

  1. Direct Plagiarism

This type of plagiarism is a server form of plagiarism because it is word-to-word copying of a paragraph of someone else work without any quotation marks.

  1. Self Plagiarism

Self-plagiarism is the kind of plagiarism of which you borrowed from your previous work it means stealing from yourself.

  1. Accidental Plagiarism

Accidental plagiarism is when an author or a writer neglects to quote their sources, unintentionally paraphrases someone else work without giving credit to the owner.

  1. Paraphrasing

In this type of plagiarism the writer usually copies or takes a important point or idea from someone else’s work. After using some synonyms and editing the sentences, they add that content in their work and present it as their own content without proper crediting the original owner of the material.

  1. Verbatim (copy & paste)

An individual that involved in verbatim plagiarism is when the person directly copy text from a source and paste it as his work without properly citing the person that own's it.

How to avoid plagiarism

This are few ways to avoid plagiarism when writing an academic work or your personal material and you build upon the work of others and use various sources for information and evidence. To avoid plagiarism, you need to correctly identify the sources into your text.

Step 1: Keep track of your sources
While you’re doing research for your paperwork, make sure you write the source of each piece of information u use. If u forget where the idea come from and present it the way it is you have unintentionally commit plagiarism.

Step 2: quote and paraphrase.
While writing your work, if you want to share an idea or a piece of information from a source, you must either paraphrase or quote the original text and indicate the source.

Example:

Step 3: Cite the original source
Every time you quote or paraphrase, you must include an in-text citation (or footnote citation) that identifies the original author.

Step 4: Use a plagiarism checker
This technology scans your document, compares it to orther documents publications on websites, an it highlights passages that looks alike.

What is citation

A “citation” is the way you tell your readers that some of the material in your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the necessary information that makes it easy for them to fine the location of the idea.
