Hello everyone, I hope you all are doing great.Thank you for the swift responses giving to my achievements 1 and 2 so I'd like to proceed to my achievement 3.The title for this task is content etiquette which requires you to follow some certain do's and don'ts when posting contents, ideas or materials on steemit. This leads us to plagiarism ( i.e one of the don'ts)
If you're aware of what stealing means, you can as well relate it to plagiarism which in my own simple terms means to present someone else's ideas or work as your own ( i. e claiming to be the author or originator) in most cases to receive credits, accolades or some sort of reward.
Now let's look at definitions from some popular dictionaries so we grasp the concept quite well
According to the university of oxford "an act of copying someone else’s work or ideas as your own without proper referencing the original author , this act can be referred to as plagiarism".
According to Cambridge English Dictionary
"the process or practice of using another person's ideas or work and pretending that it is your own. " Source
I believe we now have an idea of what plagiarism is and in addition, someone who practice plagiarism is known as a PLAGIARIST.
Plagiarism is generally considered to be a violation of honesty in learning and fairness though in some countries it is considered a sign of respect, however in many countries it is subjected to penalties, fines, punishment and even imprisonment. Now, does this mean you can't use others content? You can use others content but you have to give credit to the person by correctly citing the source just like I have done with the definitions from oxford and cambridge above. This is known as CITATION.
Plagiarism are of different forms and types, while some are intentional some could also be by accident (i. e the person has no idea he/she is plagiarizing).I'll be talking about the five most common types of plagiarism according to >"." Scribbr
📌 Global Plagiarism: presenting someone's entire text or someone's complete work as your own .This means that you didn't even make any idea of your own , the complete work you presented as yours was totally someone else's.
📌 Verbatim Plagiarism: also known as direct plagiarism and can be described as just simple copy and paste, that is when you copy someone else's words or part of someone else's words and paste it into your work without attribution ( even if the texts are slightly altered )
📌 Paraphrasing Plagiarism: paraphrasing simply means rewriting a text using other words, it only becomes plagiarism when you state the text as if they were your own .
📌 Patchwork Plagiarism: also called mosaic plagiarism means copying ideas , texts from different sources and putting them together to generate a new text.
📌 Self Plagiarism: simply be seen as reusing your own previous work which you've already gotten credit for , presenting it as brand new work.
Plagiarism is theft and hence penalties and punishment is due, it can even lead to imprisonment in many countries as it is a serious offence against the law .
In the academic field plagiarism leads to lack of increased knowledge because you keep on copying others work instead of trying to come up with ideas of your own which would make you learn a lot of things . It could also destroy your reputation because it is a dishonest act .
- When using others work, you give credit by carefully citing contents you use from other sources and make sure the citation format is correct
- Paraphrase, it's like a legitimate way to put in texts in your own words
- Carry out enough research and be determined to be creative and make your own ideas as an original . Whenever you pick any direct quote from a source, place it in a quotation mark and cite the source. You can use a plagiarism checker in case of accidental plagiarism just to make sure. With this I hope I've been able to explain what plagiarism is and why we need to try our very best not to be a plagiarist . Thank you for reading
