The Cambridge Dictionary defines Plagiarism as, "the process or practice of using another person's ideas or work and pretending that it is your own."
Plagiarism is a serious offence in an academic field. It is known as intellectual theft. Plagiarism is an act of using someone's work ( essay, article, thesis statement, research project, quotation or literary texts etc) or ideas without their consent or reference to its source. Plagiarism is a fraudulent act that attracts legal punishment because all intellectual properties are under the copyright law.
More so, plagiarism do not apply to texts alone. Visual contents such as images, charts, statistics, diagrams etc can be plagiarized as well.
Plagiarism are mostly defaulted by students. It can be done deliberately or unknowingly.
There are eight types of plagiarism namely; complete plagiarism, source-based plagiarism, direct plagiarism, self or auto plagiarism, paraphrasing plagiarism, inaccurate authorship, mosaic plagiarism, and accidental plagiarism. Source
It is advisable for one to be acquainted with the American Psychological Association 7th edition (2019) which provides a guideline on how to cite or reference a work correctly.
