The concept of originality can never be over emphasized.” Originality is the essence of true scholarship. Creativity is the soul of the true scholar”, according to late Nnamdi Azikiwe.
It is very important to learn, develop through regular practice, harness and imbibe the habit of producing an original content. Even though it might not seem that very easy at the beginning stages of becoming an original content creator; but trust me it’s worth every stress. This is the true proof of brain.
By all means steer clear of plagiarism if you ever wish to produce work that speaks quality and authenticity. It is also important to note that at some points you might need to borrow other peoples’ idea, concept, words; do well to acknowledge their effort by giving credit to the authors of those ideas or concept through proper referencing and citation. Not only does referencing and citation rid you of plagiarism, it goes a long way to strengthen your arguments by making clear the basis on which you make them.
THE CONCEPT PLAGIARISM
According to oxford dictionary, plagiarism simply denotes ‘copying of another person’s ideas, text or other creative work, and presenting it as one’s own idea, especially without permission; plagiarizing’.
FORMS OF PLAGIARISM:
source
Verbatim [word for word ] quotation without clear acknowledgement -
Quotation must always be identified as such by the use of either quotation marks or indentation, and with full referencing of sources cited. Make an extra effort to make it clear to the reader which parts are your original idea and which is from another source; let there be a clear distinction between ideas through proper referencing and citation.Cutting and pasting from the internet without clear acknowledgement-
To me this is the very height of plagiarism. Every piece of work sourced from the internet or any other sources should be adequately referenced.
- Paraphrasing-
This includes altering a few words and changing their order, or by closely following the structure of their argument, is plagiarism if you do not give due acknowledgement to the author whose work you are using.
IS PLAGIARISM A PUNISHABLE OFFENCE?
YES, plagiarism is considered a breach of academic integrity and as such a punishable offence.it goes as far as having its legal repercussions punishable by law. So by all means don’t be found a victim.
CONCLUSION
It’s important to be original while creating your content. There’s a sense of confidence and pride that comes with it, so by all means be original. Also inculcate the skill and habit of proper referencing and citation in your works.
