What is Plagiarism?

  • According to Oxford, "Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement."

  • According to Cambridge, "it is the process or practice of using another person's ideas or work and pretending that it is your own."

Types of Plagiarism

Many types exist, they are as follow:

  • When a publisher provides partial references to borrowed data used, or worse, provides wrong references. This is known as Source-based Plagiarism.
  • Using a notable part of your previously written article without proper mentions is known as Self Plagiarism.
  • The complete use of someone else's work as yours is known as Complete Plagiarism.
  • The intentional act of placing someone else's phrase or wordings amongst your publication in a manner that marks it harder to be noticed, is known as Mosaic Plagiarism.
  • The unintentional use of data from someone else's work, probably due to inattentiveness of some sort, is known as Accidental Plagiarism
  • Applying slight adjustments to an already published article and presenting as yours, is known as Paraphrasing Plagiarism.

What Causes Plagiarism?

  • Acts of laziness.
  • Always trying to keep tabs on your competitors.
  • As a result of fatigue during creation.
  • Unintentional, especially when mixed up in the publisher's mind, with previously read articles.
  • Less faith in one's ability (less confidence).

Example of Citation.

A quotation from or reference to a book, paper, or author, especially in a scholarly work.
