Good day Steemians, I trust we're all doing great? I'm pleased to present to you my next achievement task, where I'll be talking about "CONTENT ETIQUETTE". Originality is highly recognized and valued in many aspects of life, as the word implies "Originality" i.e being original or thinking out of the box, the dictionary describes it as the capacity to think independently or be inventive. I'll also be talking about plagiarism and various types of plagiarism. Let's get right to it.

Etiquette can be seen as the customary behavior of members of a society, profession or business towards each other or it can also be seen as the formal rules and manners that are considered as morally acceptable in a society or setting.

Etiquette separates people with good manners and people who behave irresponsibly everywhere.

Plagiarism simply means the act of copying or reusing another person's ideas, invention, text or other creative work and presenting it as one's own, especially without any kind of permission from the owner or proper credit given to the owner.

Plagiarism is an offense punishable by the law, as it can be categorized as a form of intellectual theft.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism can be grouped into the following types. They include:

  • Self-plagiarism
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism
  • Direct Plagiarism
  • Mosaic Plagiarism
  • Accidental plagiarism

SELF PLAGIARISM

Self plagiarism is a situation where you copy your own writing, whether intentional or not. most times the person in question here is summarizing his/her own work instead of writing a whole new article when similar topics are involved.

PARAPHRASING PLAGIARISM

This is the most common type of plagiarism. It is frequently discovered and is similar to another type of plagiarism known as the mosaic plagiarism which I'll explain in a bit. Nevertheless, the difference is that the work that has been copied isn’t mixed in with new concepts and/or research.

DIRECT PLAGIARISM

Direct plagiarism is an intentional and unethical form of stealing content. As the name implies, the writing or intellectual piece is copied word for word and inserted into a new piece, where the author tries to pass it of as a piece written or created by him/her without acknowledging the original author of the piece or giving credit where needed.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM

Mosaic plagiarism is a type of plagiarism where the work of the initial author is paraphrased without proper credit or citation. In most cases, it is hard to detect because the copied material is inserted homogeneously with many different sources, alongside the writer’s own ideas and perspective.

ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM

Most times Plagiarism doesn’t always happen on purpose. Several people may coincidentally come up with the same ideas, a piece or even a sentence in an article and present them in similar ways which may seem as though they copied ideas from others but that may not be the case.

Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional. Under the regulations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offence. Source

WAYS TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

We have a few steps here in which plagiarism can be avoided.
They include:

1. Citing your source:

In a scenario where an author needs to reuse an article that’s not theirs, adding a citation to this article is very important as it identifies the full name of the source, the date it was published, and any other citation element needed by the style guide you’re adhering to.

The necessity to acknowledge others’ work or ideas applies not only to text, but also to other media, such as computer code, illustrations, graphs etc. It applies equally to published text and data drawn from books and journals, and to unpublished text and data. Source

2. Inserting quotations :

Another way to avoid plagiarism is by using quotation marks around the text to show that the sentence was taken elsewhere.

3. Presenting your own idea:

Rather than copying or reusing another author's ideas or perspective, explore what you have to say about it. Include what unique perspective or ideas you can contribute to your writing that’s entirely your own.

4. Using plagiarism checker:

Modern day advancement has made it possible for us to have a lot of plagiarism checkers. After writing an article or carrying out research on a topic, some phrases or sentences might stick with you so well that you insert them in another article or research without a citation. When this happens, with the aid of online plagiarism checking tools these issues can be avoided when the article or research is checked severally by these plagiarism checker before it is submitted.

CONCLUSION

Plagiarism is an offense that is actually punishable by the law and it is also unethical. Instead of copying someone else's work, it is advised that we come up with our own individual ideas and perspectives thus improving our creativity. I do hope this article was educative and helpful to all.

I have read and understood the steemit etiquette that governs the steemit community and promise to abide by it. Thank you very much.
