Hello Guys, I am doing my achievement 3 and the task I need to complete is Content Etiquette.
If I accidentally say anything wrong, please let me know in the comment section. As I am still learning about this concept.
So the objective of this task is to make the newcomers aware of Plagiarism, Proof of brain concept, What to do and What not to do and Finally How you are supposed to create content on a platform like Steemit where you get rewarded for the original contents which are owned by you. So without wasting any time let's begin
So, what is Plagiarism?
As the Internet is vast and there are over billions of people. They post billions of content in different languages in their social media accounts etc. it is very hard to pick out the original owner of the content and some people make a lot of good quality content (text, images and visuals etc) but they fail to publish it or to gain public attention. This is where people with great publicity exploit the content of someone else without even letting anyone know. The one who steals the content will get all the credit and rewards and the one who made it (the Orginal owner) will get nothing. So this is where Plagiarism and Proof of Brain come into place. As for now, the Internet is getting more and more transparent and it's getting a lot more simple to Identify the original owner of the content. which helps us to safeguard the content that we create on the internet.
Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work. In educational contexts, there are differing definitions of plagiarism depending on the institution. Plagiarism is considered a violation of academic integrity and a breach of journalistic ethics. It is subject to sanctions such as penalties, suspension, expulsion from school or work, substantial fines and even incarceration. Recently, cases of "extreme plagiarism" have been identified in academia. The modern concept of plagiarism as immoral and originality as an ideal emerged in Europe in the 18th century, particularly with the Romantic movement.
- Submitting someone's work as their own.
- Taking passages from their own previous work without adding citations (self-plagiarism).
- Re-writing someone's work without properly citing sources.
- Using quotations but not citing the source.
- Interweaving various sources together in the work without citing.
- Citing some, but not all, passages that should be cited.
- Melding together cited and uncited sections of the piece.
- Providing proper citations, but failing to change the structure and wording of the borrowed ideas enough (close paraphrasing).
- Inaccurately citing a source.
- Relying too heavily on other people's work, failing to bring original thought into the text.
Let's make one thing clear, that we are not allowed to use a copyrighted image from Google Image search or from any other search engines like bing, duckduckgo and etc. As all of those images they provide will have copyright (as shown in screenshot "src") and non of them can be used for your work when you generate income. As for Steemit, it rewards you for the work you do, So it is clear that copyrighted images are not allowed here even if we provide the source.
But don't worry, As there are some websites providing Copyright / Royalty-free images, which can be used for Commercial purposes also for generating income. So we are allowed to use Non Copyrighted content with providing a source as mentioned in the T&C of the websites that we take. www.Pixabay.com is an example of this.
And for Copy- Pasting Text we can use Quotation > or "" and paste the text. under that, we can also provide the source from which we have taken the text. As a result, the Original owner will get all the credit for his work.
As for the conclusion, I will say that this is one of the most important things to be aware of before we make the post in Steemit or while we write a blog. As we are only allowed to use our original contents and if we do anything wrong it can destroy our reputation entirely and can also make the readers think that we are a fraud and we will be making the content of someone else and we will lose the trust of others. So it's always important to provide contents which are originally ours and in our own words. so that the Proof of Brain Concept is fulfilled and the readers will provide much better value to the content that we create.
As we are in a community of huge no of people and most of them will have different mindsets, it's also very important to be kind and polite to others even if they have made a bad opinion about the work we do.
