Hello steemit users. Having done my Achievement 3 post and was verified, I considered it wise to do my Achievement 4. Achievement 3 helped me see what Plagiarism is on how I can avoid it on this platform. Achievement 4 is on markdown styles Applications.
Particulate nature of matter
When you hear of matter, what comes to your mind? Anything that has weight and occupy space right?? Matter is made up of particles that are discrete such as atoms, molecules and ions as the main ones. Let's get to know these three particles.
- Atoms: An atom is the smallest particle of an element which can take part in a chemical reaction, can ever exist, and still posseses the chemical properties of that element. It is the basic unit of simple element. It actually came into existence when an erudite English Chemist put up a theory to describe its nature in the nineteenth century.
- Molecule: Is the smallest particle of a substance that can exist alone [independent] and still retain its chemical properties. Most compounds exists as molecules. On a normal note, a molecule is that smallest particle possessing chemical properties of a compound given.
- Ion: An ion is any atom or group of atoms which possesses electric charges such as the Positive and negative charge.
Dalton Atomic theory
In 1808, Dalton proposed a theory to show the nature of atoms.
Elements consist of indivisible small particles (atoms).
All atoms of the same element are identical; different elements have different types of atom.
Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed.
‘Compound elements’ (i.e. compounds) are formed when atoms of different elements join in simple ratios to form ‘compound atoms’ (i.e. molecules).
Symbols of elements
Every element has symbols it is represented with it. It was Berzelius that suggested a simple system of representing elements in the periodic table with symbols so that when seen in its symbol form, one can identify quickly. Here are the first twenty elements and their symbols.
Atomic Number | Elements | Symbols |
---|---|---|
1 | Hydrogen | H |
2 | Helium | He |
3 | Lithium | Li |
4 | Beryllium | Be |
5 | Boron | B |
6 | Carbon | C |
7 | Nitrogen | N |
8 | Oxygen | O |
9 | Fluorine | F |
10 | Neon | Be |
11 | Sodium | Na |
12 | Magnesium | Mg |
13 | Aluminum | Al |
14 | Silicon | SI |
15 | Phosphorus | P |
16 | Sulphur | S |
17 | Chlorine | Cl |
18 | Argon | Ar |
19 | Potassium | K |
20 | Calcium | CA |
