                What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is nothing but stealing of intellectual property, with or without a person's consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition. Plagiarism may be intentional or unintentional.
intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offence.

                Types of plagiarism

1.. Verbatim plagiarism or as I call it (copy & paste)

You commit verbatim plagiarism when you directly copy text from a source and paste it into your own document without attribution. If the structure and the majority of the words are the same as in the original, then it is verbatim plagiarism, even if you delete or change a couple of words here and there.

2.. Mosaic plagiarism (also known as patchwork plagiarism)

It means copying phrases, passages and ideas from different sources and putting them together to create a new text. This includes slightly rephrasing passages while keeping many of the same words and structure as the original.

3.. Plagiarizing your own work (self-plagiarism)

Self-plagiarism means reusing work that you’ve previously submitted. Even though it’s your own work, it’s considered dishonest to present a paper or a piece of data as brand new when you’ve already gotten credit for the work.

                 Who is a plagiarist?

A plagiarist is someone who uses another person's words or ideas as if they were his own.

What to do to avoid plagiarism

1.Paraphrase

Paraphrasing is rewriting a source’s ideas or information into your own words, without changing its meaning. But also paraphrasing can slip into plagiarism if done incorrectly.

2.Include quotations

If you insert a source’s words into your writing, verbatim, one of the most simple yet obvious ways to avoid plagiarism is by using quotation marks around the text to denote that the words aren’t your own. A direct quote should also cite the source so that readers know who the quote is from.

  1. Use a plagiarism checker

While conducting your research on a topic, some phrases or sentences might stick with you so well that you inadvertently include them in your writing without a citation. When in doubt, using an online plagiarism checking tool can help you catch these issues before submitting your work.
