Hello steemians, It's amazing being here. Steemit is really a learning platform and I hope to learn more. Prior to this post, I have completed my Achievement 1 and 2. And today I wish to make my achievement 3 post.
What is plagiarism?
Nobody would appreciate his or her ideas whether in written or recorded form stolen by another person. Plagiarism simply means the representation of another person's work, ideas or thoughts and passing them off as one's own. It could be in form of rewriting, recopying or pasting the work of another person without giving credit to the original author. However, the act of plagiarism can sometimes be purely unintentional but that does not in any way exempt or excuse the offender from future consequences.
Types of plagiarism
Complete plagiarism: In this case the plagiarist, takes another person's work and begin to parade it like his own. This is the most severe form of plagiarism.
Direct plagiarism: This is when words are being copied verbatim i.e word for word from an author's work or from the internet thus; passing it as your own.
Mosaic plagiarism: the plagiarist here copies or borrow words from different authors to create an entirely new post without citation.
Self plagiarism: In this case, the plagiarist copies his previously written works without citing them.
Accidental plagiarism: As stated earlier, there is no excuse whatsoever for plagiarism. Here a plagiarist unintentionally makes use of another person's thought or idea without giving credit to the original author.
Penalties for plagiarism on steemit
Loss of reputation
Engaging in plagiarism could lead to ruined reputation. Imagine an individual with a reputation of 60 moving down to 12. That could be traumatic, debilitating and painful. But that would have been avoided if the copyright rules had been kept and duly followed.
Loss of rewards
Another consequence of getting involved in plagiarism here on steemit is that one's reward could be down-voted if found guilty. Hence; should be avoided if rewards must be redeemed.
Loss of account on the steemit platform
A plagiarist could be prohibited or ban from participating in any activities or contest organized by different communities on the steemit platform if found guilty.
How can I avoid plagiarism?
when borrowing an idea or content from a source in writing or publishing an article, do ensure you cite the name of the source you are getting it from or the name of the author whose content you are borrowing from where necessary. The place of citation should not be downplay.
Before adding your own thoughts or ideas, paraphrase or quote from your source.
Using a plagiarism checker to access your work before submission could be helpful.
