Hello, steem world, first of all, I want to thank @amjadsharif for verifying my Achievement 2 task. This is my Achievement 3 and today I will be talking about Plagiarism.

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Plagiarism is a term that refers to the stealing or copying of another person's work or ideas and redistributing them as your own. Plagiarism has presented itself as one of the problems in our society nowadays. This is in the sense that plagiarism has made many people around the world, of every age group reluctant, and unable to take responsibility for themselves, and come up with their own ideas.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism as we know it has presented itself in many ways. These various ways can be analyzed as follows;

1. Direct Plagiarism

Direct Plagiarism, in other words, called Deliberate Plagiarism occurs when an author copies the text of another author word-to-word without giving any credit, citations, or references. Direct plagiarism is one of the most common forms of plagiarism and therefore the most severe. Plagiarism of this nature is deemed dishonest and will result in disciplinary action in the classroom. This, however, isn't unheard of, but it's also not a serious breach of academic or ethical policy.

2. Paraphrasing Plagiarism

Paraphrasing means taking someone else's piece of work, changing a few words, and publishing it as your own. Paraphrasing plagiarism is defined as rewriting other people's ideas and work and publishing them as your own. This is also one of the most common types of plagiarism. Even when you paraphrase text but the original author's name is not cited in your sources, it is still considered plagiarism. It is critical to run your work through a plagiarism tool such as CopyScape before submitting them in order to avoid being taken down guilty for plagiarism.

3. Self-Plagiarism

This is one of the most prevalent and straightforward types of plagiarism committed by writers and students. Self-plagiarism occurs when a writer reuses or attempts to combine elements from prior works with the new one. It is unfair to take content that you have created for another website and use it on your own. Self-plagiarism is the act of repurposing your previous work in order to create fresh content. It's dishonest to present your past work as new when you've already been given credit for it. It is critical to cite your own ideas and efforts in order to avoid self-plagiarism.

4. Mosaic Plagiarism

This method is also called incremental or patchworks plagiarism. When a writer plagiarizes using this method, he or she copies and pastes ideas, phrases, and quotes from several sources to create new content. This includes altering the paragraph structure and as well as the wordings and phrases. Mosaic plagiarism is more difficult to detect because it incorporates other people's terminology or textual content into your own research. However, plagiarism checkers, such as Turnitin, can quickly detect mosaic plagiarism.

5. Accidental Plagiarism

When the author of an essay or a blog mixes up two different pieces of information from different writers and fails to properly cite them, it is known as accidental plagiarism. It is critical to accurately cite sources in order to avoid accidental plagiarism. To properly cite the article, you can utilize online generators such as BibMe.

HOW TO PREVENT PLAGIARISM

There are many ways to avoid plagiarism. Some of which include;

  • If you should borrow data, be it ideas, text, or images, you should properly cite its source. That is, any text you use which is not initially yours should be cited
  • You should endeavour to include quotations when using borrowed work
  • To avoid plagiarism, convey your own ideas, thoughts, expressions, language, and everything from yourself as much as possible. This serves as an enormous punch to plagiarism's face.
  • Another severe punch to plagiarism's face is the use of plagiarism checkers. Plagiarism checkers such as CopyScape and Turnitin helps reduce plagiarism. This is in the sense that they go through a piece of work making sure that any uncited text from archives or from other authors' passed work is detected, thereby reducing plagiarism.

HOW TO PROPERLY CITE OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK IN ORDER TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

In order to properly cite other people's work, make sure to always give the original other of the work credit by documenting your sources. And when using direct quotes from other people's work, always credit the author by putting them in quotation marks.
