What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of stealing or passing off someone else's work as your own without acknowledging or giving them credit for their work. It is therefore important to cite our sources whenever we use images or quotes that are not ours in order to avoid being accused of plagiarism.

Example of Citation

The brain is the most important human organ. "It controls most of the activities of the body, processing, integrating and coordinating the information it receives from the sense organs and making decisions as to the instructions sent to the rest of the body."source The largest part of the brain which is the cerebrum, consists of two cerebral hemispheres.source

The above has one original sentence:

The brain is the most important human organ.

The second sentence is in quotation marks because it was copied the exact same way from its source without any alteration:

"It controls most of the activities of the body, processing, integrating and coordinating the information it receives from the sense organs and making decisions as to the instructions sent to the rest of the body." Source

And the last sentence is paraphrased from the same source:

The largest part of the brain which is the cerebrum, consists of two cerebral hemispheres.Source

Types of plagiarism

Plagiarism can occur in different ways, we are now going to look at the various types of plagiarism.

  • Self plagiarism- This occurs when a person recycles his/her previous work while authoring subsequent ones. Self plagiarism can also occur if a writer recycles parts of the intellectual materials they've authored before and incorporates them into a new work.

  • Mosaic plagiarism- This occurs when a writer uses phrases from a source without quoting them. It also occurs when a writer replaces the words of another writer while maintaining the overall structure of the original work.

  • Direct plagiarism- This is the word for word incorporation of another person's work into your own without attributing it to them.

  • Accidental plagiarism- This occurs when a person incorrectly quotes their source or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar vocabulary and structure without attribution.
