Hello steemians, its @ucheike again, I am excited to be writing my achievement 3
Objectives of this Task:
To understand:
- How to cite a source
- Content Etiquette
- Plagiarism
How to cite a source
A well structured and cited article includes:
Adding a link of the source to the particular content sourced. If individual definitions are used from a different author, the link should be placed immediately after the text with the appropriate mark down style.
Content Etiquette
Etiquette can be defined as:
The formal manners and rules that are followed in social or professional settings source
Therefore, in my own definition content etiquette can be defined as the application of the formal rules following a professional writing setting
Plagiarism
My own definition of Plagiarism can be simply put as the act of using someone's intellectual work without proper reference or claiming outright ownership of it.
Wikipedia defines plagiarism “as the representation of another author’s language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one’s original work. source
to steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as one's. to use another’s production without crediting the source. To commit literary theft source
There are different types of plagiarism namely:
Direct plagiarism:
This refers to the word-for-word translation of a part of an author’s work, without paraphrasing. It's seen as unethical and academicals, dishonest. source. In my own words I can define Direct plagiarism as the act of stealing another published work and using it as yours.Self Plagiarism:
Plagiarizing oneself by reusing an already published work without permission.
Self-plagiarism applies too when submitting the same project for assignments in different lectures without permission from the lecturers and scholars. source. Therefore I can define Self plagiarism as process of using my own specific words repeatedly in different published worksMosaic Plagiarism:
When a student or pupil borrows quotes from a source without quotating, or paraphrasing while maintaining the original, it's called Mosaic Plagiarism or Patch Writing.source. Hence I can define Mosaic plagiarism as the act of using quotes without proper referencing.Accidental Plagiarism:
Many authors usually fall under this category. In an attempt to paraphrase a researched work, the researcher might end up misquoting the section of the researched work thereby giving it a different meaning from the original context.
Things to do to prevent plagiarism:
- First and foremost be original there's no point lynching others ’ hard work and content, there are a ton of things to create original content, be creative.
- The proper use of markdowns and citation to help you in referencing your source for a quote, photo, or video.
- Always check post for plagiarism and make sure all source is cited before posting on the steemit platform.
In conclusion, it is safe to say that we know what plagiarism is, the consequence when we indulge in the act of plagiarism, and how to avoid making a plagiarized post.
Having completed the required Achievement 3, I'll call upon the steem greeters: @cryptokannon, @yohan2on, @ngoenyi, @kiwiscanfly among others to check if I've successfully met the full requirements of the task.
