Good day knowsome Steemians. Having just completed my task on achievement 3, I am moving onto achievement 4. I will be enlightening us all an important topic called phonics. In our day to day conversations, we get to use words and might be oblivious of how they are properly used, therefore, I will also be throwing more light on the usage of these alphabets that make up our English words.
PHONICS |
---|
Phonics is a topic relating to sound. It is a linguistic tool used to help people learn how to speak and write any language that uses an alphabet. It involves the recognition of sounds and relating them to the general spelling form of a particular language. The main aim of phonics is to help individuals learn the basics of a language's alphabet through a coherent and repeated relationship between the spellings and the sounds.
With this skill, people are able to read, write, hear, and speak a language more effectively. They are also able to understand, evaluate and decipher new or challenging words more easily on their own.
Types of Phonics |
---|
We have two basic or main types of phonics.
- Synthetic Phonics. (Blended phonics)
- Analytic phonics. (Implicit phonics)
Synthetic Phonics |
---|
This is a method of teaching phonics where words are broken down into the smallest units of sound (called phonemes. Phoneme is a distinct unit of sound that combines with another distinct unit of sound to form words) It starts at the individual sound/phoneme level and builds up to the whole word. Synthetic phoncs teaches you how to identify all the phonemes in a word and match them to a letter in order to be able to spell correctly.
For example: In the word bat, you identify three individual phonemes using the synthetic phonics method, that is: /b/ /a/ /t/ they are then blended back together to produce a word with the correct pronunciation.
Analytic Phonics |
---|
Unlike the synthetic phonics, the analytic phonics starts at the word level and it does not teach the combining of sounds together as is done in synthetic phonics.
In analytic phonics, you analyse and study the complete words to check spelling patterns and then separate them into the onset (beginning) and the rime. This decoding enables you to make a comparison with other words you may know from the same word family. For example, if you know ‘goat’, ‘float’ and ‘boat’, then when you encounter the word ‘moat’ it will be easy to read, even though it's the very first time you're seeing the word.
Analytic phonics helps with spelling, for example; using the word 'bug', where you've learnt the initial sound from 'big' and 'bat'. This will help you conclude that you should write that sound with the same letter (grapheme: a grapheme is a written symbol representing a sound (phoneme) 'b'.
Generally, you learn to recognise words by sight in analytic phonics. These words are called sight words.
The term Phonics is very broad and involves many other new concepts but for the purpose of this achievement, I will be focusing on the 26 letters of the alphabet and only one sound of each letters.
NOTE: Most alphabets have different pronunciations depending on how and where it's been used. There are other exceptional instances where these alphabets being governed by English rules are allowed to sound differently and there are other instances where there are just silent.
