Spodoptera exigua nucleopolihedro virus (SeNPV; sometimes called Spodoptera exigua nuclear polyhedrosis virus).
Have you ever found an onion caterpillar (Spodoptera exigua) that fits the position as shown in the attached photo?
That is the typical position of the onion caterpillar that dies from the SeNPV virus. SeNPV is a virus that naturally causes disease and death in onion caterpillars. If many onions are infected with viruses like this, you may collect the contents in the water, then filter them, and the water containing the virus can be used as a biological insecticide.
. a bit slow. The caterpillar will stop eating about 4 days before becoming infected and die for a week later.
Warning: To spray use clear water that is neutral (pH 7), and does not contain chlorine. Do not mix with copper fungicides.
Note: The target pests of insecticidal viruses are very specific. SeNPV was only able to control the onion caterpillar (Spodootera exigua). Another insecticidal virus, Spodoptera litura nucleopolihedro virus (SlNPV) only controls Spodoptera litura; Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolihedro virus (HaNPV) only controls Helicoverpa armigera.

Spodoptera exigua nucleopolihedro virus (SeNPV; kadang disebut Spodoptera exigua nuclear polyhedrosis virus).
Teman-teman ada yg pernah menemukan ulat bawang (Spodoptera exigua) yg mati dengan posisi seperti pada foto terlampir?
Itu adalah posisi khas ulat bawang yg mati karena virus SeNPV. SeNPV adalah virus yg secara alami menyebabkan penyakit dan kematian pada ulat bawang. Kalau banyak ulat bawang yg kena virus seperti ini, boleh Anda kumpulkan kemudian dihancurkan dalam air, lalu disaring, dan air yg mengandung virus dapat digunakan sebagai insektisida biologi.
Kalau air yg mengandung virus disemprotkan pada tanaman bawang merah dan kemudian daun bawang merah tadi dimakan oleh ulat bawang, maka ulat tsb ada sakit, dan kemudian mati. Supaya ulat dapat tertular virus, ulat harus makan daun bawang yg sudah disemprot dng virus tadi. Jadi, SeNPV adalah racun perut. Saat penyemprotan seluruh daun bawang harus terbasahi.
SeNPV lebih ampuh untuk mengendalikar ulat bawang yg masih kecil (instar 1-2). Bekerja agak lambat. Ulat akan berhenti makan sekitar 4 hari sesudah terinfeksi dan mati seminggu kemudian.
Peringatan: Untuk menyemprot gunakan air jernih yg netral (pH 7), dan tidak mengandung klorin. Jangan dicampur dengan fungisida tembaga.
Catatan: Hama sasaran dari insektisida virus sangat spesifik. SeNPV hanya bosa mengendalikan ulat bawang (Spodootera exigua). Insektisida virus lainnya, Spodoptera litura nucleopolihedro virus (SlNPV) hanya mengendalikan Spodoptera litura; Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolihedro virus (HaNPV) hanya mengendalikan Helicoverpa armigera.
