The market, in the true sense ...

The market, and the many aspects it has. The market in the true sense. When I think of the market, the first image is of a place where food is sold. Traditional market.

It's a challenge, one of the best around us, called #marketfriday and hosted by @dswigle. Here I learned that the market can be any place where something is sold, but it is not mandatory.

I like to write about the market and sometimes I even manage to find less common topics but I usually write about the market in the neighborhood, near my house.

The market where I always buy the ingredients for everyday food. A market that suffered during the lockdown but is now full of life again and crowded, unfortunately people quickly forgot about the protection measures against covid-19. This can be seen immediately in the statistics, the number of diseases has increased again, we have reached the first place in Europe these days.

In these conditions, I have to run to the market and take not-so-great photos. Because no one really enjoys being photographed. I am referring to sellers and owners of small shops in the area.

With the necessary apologies regarding the quality of the photos, I will show you how to buy in a market on the outskirts of a city. On the outskirts of Bucharest, in Romania! The market, in the true sense ...

First of all fruits and vegetables. The largest part of the market, the offer is large and because of this you must first go through all the stalls to choose the best goods.

Meat. Meat is an important food, please vegetarians and vegans forgive me for saying that.

Bread and pastries. In Romania we eat a lot of bread. The custom comes from the past. There was not much food and its lack was compensated with bread. Now food is everywhere and we still eat a lot of bread. There are small bakeries in the market where you can buy many kinds of bread.

The part I don't like about the market is that there are a lot of cars. It would have been great if the whole market was pedestrianized, I could have been more focused on shopping and less avoiding cars.

The old residents of the neighborhood use bicycles.

These are the usual places for strictly necessary shopping. There are many other shops but I couldn't take pictures there. After exhausting the shopping list, I prepared a little summer omelet, my favorite. It can also be yours, that's why I make a very short presentation of its preparation.

Necessary ingredients:

  • eggs

IMG_20200709_150909.jpg

  • green onions, parsley, dill and larch
  • cheese and ham

IMG_20200709_150918.jpg

Mix eggs with the other ingredients and add a little milk, salt and pepper.

IMG_20200709_152234.jpg

I put everything in a pan with oil and a cube of butter. I fry, not too much, so that the omelette stays tender and fluffy.

Now we can eat. It's tasty and easy to make. The shopping session wasn't in vain.

I love going to your smaller, neighborhood markets. I know how they don't like you to take pictures. Seems like many of the small markets are like that. I am really surprised at the lack of masks and social distancing. Where I live, they won't let you in the store without one. In all the places they opened up, the cases have gone up once again. Not to the degree of the when it started, but, too many for me. If people could only follow simple directions.

At least the food is abundant and you don't have to search for items. There are some items here that they have stopped manufacturing for now and the focus is on the more popular items. I can see why. Not enough profit, and isn't that what they are all about? I didn't realize that Romania was #1 . That is a contest nobody wants to win. I see a lot of older people riding bikes here also. They are of the generation where everyday things are part of their exercise. So much smarter, in my opinion. Fresh air and exercise and the parking spaces are easier to find. Despite your haste to get pictures, I think they all came out well.

As for your finishing touch of cooking, what can I say? My favorite part of your post! Of course, it is all good, but, I like to eat! Your omelet is fluffy and delicious looking. I must say that the ingredients being fresh like yours really pumps up the flavor. I don't use dill in mine and use a different cheese ( I had to look up the larch cheese, google kept giving me round cheese boards, until finally! I saw it!) I may try dill when I go to the store this week. I am interested to see how it tastes in an omelet.

I want to thank you always. It is always fun to hear and see how your week went. Thank you so much for taking the time to join the challenge! You always surprise me with your posts and take us with you. I love the neighborhood shops as I think you get to know people better. We have gone to bigger and bigger. More products and less "getting to know you."

I appreciate the love and support you are giving to #MarketFriday! It is people such as yourself that made it into such a successful challenge! Thank you again for being a part of all this and I hope that you will, indeed, have a Thank you for all you do!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge!
