I wholeheartedly admit that I stole this idea from @kristves. I saw her making these really cool posts about RuneScape, which she played in her childhood and I thought I'd make a similar post. However, my post is not about RuneScape (I did play it a lot though).
Have you heard of Artix Entertainment?
I bet you have, you little nerd. I am specifically going to talk about a few of their games: AdventureQuest Worlds (or AQW for short), DragonFable and MechQuest. These were the three games of Artix Entertainment that I played the most. In my humble opinion, AQW was the most fun one, but I did love playing DragonFable and MechQuest occasionally.
Alright, let's talk about AQW.
If you've heard of the company before, they make these cartoonish fighting/turn-based combat games. AQW was something inbetween - you ran up to a monster, used your abilities and tried your best to kill it. There were a lot of bosses and a lot of smaller monsters. I remember the grind for different high-tier loot and XP and money, which was quite hard to come by in the early years.
The yellow names are moderators (J6, in my opinion, always had the coolest gear). Oh, and Artix, whose name you might see on screen, has an ingame pet named Daimyo. He actually has this dog in real life and the dog is super cute.
This is what the game looked like in the early years. Mind you, this is a picture taken off Google, because browsers don't support Flash Player that well anymore and I'm too lazy to download the launcher, hah!
I remember that when I was about 13 or 14, I loved playing this game a lot. You could even say I was addicted. AQW has this schedule that on every Friday at 6PM EST, they release a new update to the game. It usually was some kind of new shop, some new areas, maybe a holiday event (for example Christmas events or Easter events) or whatever you stumbled upon.
However, notice how the time is 6PM EST. As Estonians, we are ahead of EST by 6 hours, which meant that I had to stay up until midnight (or even longer if the updates crashed the servers) in order to be the in the group of people that were the first one to grind and acquire the loot, finish the quests and such.
You could say that I got yelled at by my mother and brother quite often. If that was the case and I had to go to bed on Friday night before midnight, I woke up really early on Saturday, made myself some breakfast and sat behind my computer to grind, grind, grind.
At this point when writing the post, I got so interested about what my character looked like that I downloaded the game launcher and checked out my character and my epic loot.
Aw yiss. This is my character. I have no idea where the name originates from, but I remember that I used to create new characters all the time and change the name. However, since this was my highest level account (the level cap is a f*cking 100 now, it used to be 30-40 lol), which is 43 right now, I was too lazy to start grinding for XP on a new account and just let it be.I remember that I always wanted to get a membership, but since it was quite expensive, I could never afford it. I tried getting AC's (which is the... P2P currency, you could call it), but that didn't work out quite well for me either. I know now, that they have started giving out AC-s to all players who have logged in in a year's time or something like that. So I just tend to log in sometimes and get my free moneyyyyyy! AC's can be used to buy cooler gear and such, which is the reason why I wanted that currency so much. I have a shitton of gold, I noticed, but that didn't stop me from trying to get more.
Fun areas of the game
Firstly, I have to mention that my favourite server of all time was Safiria. I now logged onto Yorumi, because Safiria doesn't exist anymore, but that was my favourite server. The server was usually semi-crowded, which meant that you could always team up with people fighting bosses and such.
One of my favourite areas of the game was Yulgar's Inn.
This was the place where the coolest kids used to hang out. They were always geared out to heck and always had their own friends, with whom they were talking to at the inn. The chat system was quite nice - if you were under 13 (I think) then you couldn't speak freely, but had to use the ingame prompts (on the bottom left corner of the screen). If you were over 13 (and had your parent's permission) you could just talk freely. I remember that I always used to enter my email as my parent's and got to spoke freely, mwhahaha.
I also really liked hanging around Arcangrove, which was this huge tower surrounded by all types of different monsters. The other reason why this place was so cool was that if you reached a certain point in the game (called reputation), you got to buy this really cool class, which was the strongest class in the game when I played it. It is called the Shaman class, it looked really cool at the time as well.
The last place where I spent most of my time AFK'ing was my player house. Since you either had to be a member or have a lot of AC's, I just had this lousy thing. It was quite nice at the time, though. Whenever I had to take out the trash or something, I went to my player house and afk'd there, because there was no-one who could interrupt me there.
Ah! I've played Adventure Quest but not AQW! AQ was singleplayer and like AQW was to you, AQ was a part of my childhood, too. I remember actually deciding my fighting strategy with each monster based on their stats / weakness against certain kind of magic, and buying pets and stuff from NPCs. The graphics were so simple and cartoonish. It was a quite interesting game to play. :)
Also not too long ago Adventure Quest 3D came out as a MMORPG on Steam. Have you played it? I did a while when it was still in Open Beta (around 10h) but haven't picked it up later.

I actually played it a bit as well, when it was in Beta, but since the controls were kinda wonky and I didn't fancy playing computer games at all that time, I just decided to let it be. Maybe I should try it again. ;)

I used to play MechQuest a lot. I had some pretty cool mechs but kind of gave up because of time. Growing up sucks. Mind you I was a grown up when I was playing that game.

I really liked MechQuest as well, but since I was already playing AQW at the time, I liked the multiplayer spectrum a bit more... Thank you for your answer! <3
