If you've recently gone vegan, you might be searching for ways to make your favorite food suit your new diet. Is one of those foods Indian tacos, AKA fry bread tacos? If so, you're in luck. It's actually quite easy to make a healthier, vegan version of this traditional native food. From the fry bread to the toppings, you may even like vegan Indian tacos better than the original.
Fry bread
Fry bread is not inherently healthy. Still, it can be improved upon. You may not think so, but stay with me on this. It's all about the type of ingredients you use. Make it vegan by omitting the lard and white flour, using GMO free whole grain flour and organic coconut oil instead. I've actually written an entire article on making healthy fry bread as a companion to this one.
The meat
Natives may argue that the buffalo meat used in traditional Indian tacos is healthier than ground beef. They have a point. It's lower in fat, for sure. The problem is, it's still meat. Why contribute to killing off those beautiful animals or over-breeding them for food? That's certainly not vegan. Instead of buffalo meat, use any vegan meat that suits your taste.
Bean tacos
If you're not that into meat substitutes, you can easily make Indian bean tacos instead. Simply add taco seasonings to cooked beans. They're absolutely delicious, high in protein and low in fat. That is, discounting the fry bread. Incidentally, you will want to be sure to drain your fry bread on paper towels before assembling your tacos to lessen the fat content.
Sub out the iceberg lettuce.
Vegans do eat iceberg lettuce. However, if you want a higher nutrient vegan taco, try some alternatives. You can use any number of things that are better for you and taste wonderful. How about trying sprouts or macro greens in place of the lettuce? Kale is a nutrient dense substitute for those who like it. You might also try spinach on your Indian tacos.
Skip the cheese or....
Not everyone has a taste for vegan cheeses. However, if you miss cheese as a vegan, they're certainly worth a try. I've had a few different ones on vegan tacos. They're not bad. It's just that I prefer not to use them as they are not a naturally occurring food. I'm kind of a stickler about that sometimes. You might also try ground cashews as a cheesy topping. They're quite tasty in my opinion.
Salsa is vegan.
I use fresh garden tomatoes, onions and peppers in mine when they're in season. In the off season, I buy organic versions of all three. I like the flavor that green onions give the salsa in particular. Making salsa is just a matter of chopping and combining the ingredients. I also add a bit of fresh cilantro and garlic to mine.
Keeping Indian tacos simple.
Fry bread tacos are traditionally simple. So, why not keep them that way? There's really no need to elaborate on this simple, traditional food. You can keep it vegan without going overboard. Then again, if you're wanting something a bit fancier, you can add black olives, mushrooms, green bell peppers or any number of fresh veggies.
