In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, someone suggesting that humanity should work towards becoming a multi-planetary species will most likely be taken as the rumblings of a mad man.
After all, we have a whole pandemic to take care of! And from the looks of it, this pesky virus isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Not unless we can make a vaccine or find a cure. And even then it might linger around.
If that were not enough, we will soon have to deal with the adverse impacts of economic fallouts throughout the world due to this pandemic. That will send the world into despair for a few years if history is anything to go by.
So, why would one suggest that we quickly need to become a multi-planetary species? Well, it is for these exact reasons. It doesn't need to and cannot, in fact, happen right now as we have such huge crises in our hands. But after that, we better take a serious look at it.
Human Survival Could Be At Stake
The pandemic has caught everyone off guard. Literally no one in the world was prepared for it. After all, we don't live "normal lives" with end-of-the-world scenarios at the back of our minds at all times, do we?
But these kinds of events do happen. And they will always continue to happen. This raises some important questions. What if the threat was much more severe? What if this virus was much more deadly with alarmingly higher fatality rates? Things could have turned apocalyptic pretty soon.
And this is just one of the many things that can happen that can threaten our survival. The dinosaurs discovered the hard way what an asteroid can do. Then there is always our own kind that can wage wars and end the planet with nuclear missiles. So. Many. Threats.
Also, we cannot expect to be prepared for virtually any kind of future threat. Some of these are way beyond our control. But we can do something to ensure our survival. And it will take a lot of courage and determination. We need to become a multi-planetary civilization.
Only when we have a whole another planet as a backup, can we be sure that the light of consciousness as far as we know it, will never be extinguished. After we have dealt with this virus and the economic impacts, I think we should take a good hard look at the cosmos.
