While I was listening Leyenda, one of the Suite Españolas by Isaac Albéniz, I observe carefully that beautiful but dark painting of a Mr. Villalpando who lived many yesterdays in my homeland.
I don't know which caused me more impact, whether the gaze of the Virgin Mary full of solemnity and indifference, or the dedication of the archangel who was by her side to fight against evil. It made me wonder if this was how things would be at the time of the Apocalypse or if it would only be a figurative interpretation of our extinction, the humanity's subject of obsession since the dawn of time.
Sighing, I say goodbye mentally to the painting and continue my walk, carrying with me that sudden reflection on the state of things.

On the artwork
The Virgin of Apocalypse is an artwork elaborated at the end of the XVII century by the novohispanic painter Cristóbal de Villalpando, mostly recognized for his religious-themed works and for his particular technique in handling color and a marked tenebrism with which he addresses some biblical aspects. It is currently exhibited in the International Baroque Museum in the city of Puebla, Mexico.
This painting evokes one of the well-known passages from the Apocalypse of Saint John, The Woman and the Dragon. In the work we see the lady in question, represented as the Virgin Mary; around her figure, although in a very subtle way, halos of sunlight can be observed. At her feet, angels are seen holding her, as if they are rescuing her from immediate danger; to one side of the angels, although not very visible, we notice a figure similar to a snake, the biblical dragon. Next to the Virgin is the archangel Michael, who fights against the dragon; the drops that appear next to it could be interpreted as the stars that had been dragged by the beast or its blood when one of its heads was severed.
We find, in the lower left side, the apostle Saint John; his presence, although unnoticed by the viewer, reinforces the central motif of the passage, which is the Apocalypse, the mystical vision that Saint John the Evangelist has on the Greek island of Patmos, where he was exiled because of his evangelizing activities. On the right side, in the background, we see God receiving a child, presumably Christ reborn.
