Spices And Herbs

Hello Steemians,

Lets talk about Ingredients , spices and herbs we put in our food.

We are living in an era where we have information overload, you are just a tap away from your next answer. If I needed steps on how to prepare a particular meal, I would have a zillion options. We have a variety of herbs and spices , ranging from Black peppercorns, cinnamon, chili powder, round ginger, ground Cumin. All these have been instrumental in serving us the best meal there is.

However, when we look back in the African Traditional Society, our ancestors had none of those spices. In the Acholi Culture in particular, it would either be boiled food ,ranging from beans, meat, groundnuts, name it, or it would be pasted sauce.

When I compare the two generations, times have really changed. To a millennial and to some people living in this era, a meal served without any spices may be termed as ‘not tasty’. In my opinion, I think we need to draw a line between what is beneficial to our bodies from what would be appealing to the taste of our tongue.

Of late, there is this spice that has caught my attention. It is one which has been incorporated in many other spices. Looking at it, some may think it is Ginger.

It is Tumeric!

Tumeric May help improve skin health
Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, turmeric may be an effective treatment for a variety of skin conditions, including acne, eczema (atopic dermatitis), photoaging, and psoriasis. Yet robust research is lacking.imagesource

As if that is not enough, there are other benefits like easing arthritis conditions, help prevent cancer, Alzheimer's disease.

Potential risks and complications
Turmeric is generally safe as long as you consume it in moderation. You should check with your doctor about drinking turmeric tea if you have had:
• inflammation of the gallbladder or gallbladder stones
• obstruction of bile passages
• stomach ulcers
• diabetes (turmeric supplements may lower blood sugar)
Taking too much turmeric may cause side effects, however. These include:
• increased stomach acidity, which can cause ulcers
• a blood-thinning effect
Because turmeric may thin your blood, you should stop drinking turmeric tea two weeks before surgery. Do not take turmeric tea if you are on blood thinners, either.imagesource

On the overall, this spice is actually good for your health if added to one’s food in its natural state. I have tried this in mostly my fatty meals like meat, fish instead of our mchuzi mix.

.My advice is , adding these spices in their natural state to our foods may be more beneficial than relying on a finished product .We can try this and see what the results may look like.
