19th, September 2020 was a dark day for Makerere University as the most iconic building on the University got destroyed in a fire. This building was built in 1941 therefore it was about 80 years old and held so much history and memories for the university.
The fire happened at night though the fire brigade did come and help put out the fire. The reason for the arson that destroyed the building was allegedly due to electrical faults in installation. The fire destroyed documents in various offices like that of the Vice-Chancellor among others. Property like furniture, personal property were destroyed. Luckily, there were no victims.
The fire is said to have started from the top most floor and on the right side of the building. I did go to pick some documents and I toured the building and saw the wreckage and it was really sad but we have to hope that it is for a reason and hopefully some good may come out of it. Though the basement actually stayed intact
The University management are allegedly hoping to keep the design of the building, in that even though it is rebuilt afresh the design remains the way it was. The management of the university allegedly requires 1.5 billion to rebuild the Ivory Tower. Some donors have made donations for its rebuilding though the University is allegedly waiting for the heads up from government to proceed with rebuilding.
Many graduations have taken place and graduates have made it a point to take pictures in front of the building to keep the memories. Students have gone there to verify various documents therefore not only does it hold memories for staff but for some students to.
All in all, it is my prayer that even a better building is put up and more memories are made and hopefully this one gets to stick around for forever.
Oooh this is really good that a nice building is put up but sorry for that incident
