To make a really good fire, you need to understand the basic principles for creating one.

The first thing you must have available is fuel. We have dedicated a special article about it, for more information, you can read "Different sources of fuel for the fire.When you add the necessary heat to the fuel, a gas is produced which, in combination with the air, burns.

But let's start with the basics…!

Preparing the fire

Before lighting a fire, think about:

the area you are in, what the climate and terrain are like;

what materials and tools you have or can find near you;

how much time do you have to make a fire;

why is your fire, answering this question you will find out how big to make it;

how close the wild animals are and whether you will need protection from them.
Where to place the fire

Look for a dry place that:

is protected from the wind;

is suitable for the location of your shelter or is located near it;

will direct and concentrate the heat in the direction you want;

has the right amount of fuel to keep the fire going long enough.

Site preparation

1. If you are in an area with a lot of bushes and it is significantly overgrown, clear the bushes;

2. Make a circle at least a meter in diameter in which you clean the ground to the ground to prevent unwanted growth of fire;

3. Build "walls" of the fire by using stones to place next to each other in the form of a circle in the cleared area;

4. If you have time, make one wall higher to divert heat in the direction you want, which will also help reduce the spread of embers and small sparks from the wind. To prepare a wall for reflection, you can also use a natural barrier, such as a rock, to which you can stick the fire.
