The Walls We Build...

Walls can sometimes be a good thing and many other times be a bad thing. The intention doesn't always matter at the end of the day because there are some influence factors we couldn't possibly control even if we wanted to. Our foresight is often limited as we don't see beyond what's currently in front of us. All we do is strictly based on assumptions and hope that it all works out as planned or the way we wished it to. While that has proven resourceful, not to mention in the least, we can deduce that our influence over outcomes is often to a limited degree. Regardless, we put actions first and anticipate the consequences that come after. That's not so different from gambling. We, humans, gamble a lot in virtually every single decision made and action taken. Well, we can say it's the reason for actions taken or not taken.

What Does Wall Function As? Why Do We Build?

Walls are often meant to make us feel safer. You know, protect against potential dangers or unwanted intrusions by a third party. However, walls are not always physical or visible to the naked eyes. Some people build walls around their emotions. They are often seen as the "no-nonsense" and unemotional type. They hide their feelings so well. Perhaps they've been hurt many times than they cared to count, and they just can't go through the painful process all over again. Some of these walls might include; not allowing anyone to get too close to them ever again or simply the "I don't care or give a fuck attitude", which is a charade by the way.

Some build walls to hide their inadequacies. These categories of people feel they are never enough. They always manage to view themselves through societal eyes "what people say or don't say". They are often those with issues arising from self-esteem, and they tend to hold the word of others sacred than theirs. They also know the world we live in always finds a way to prey on the weak ones, so they pretend to be strong and hide away their inadequacies with walls they build. Some of the walls might include; pushing harder than most or beyond the limit just to prove the presumptions of others wrong, that you are enough. Some even go as far as acting godlike, like they don't have a breaking point, or act perfection when they are not. Celebrities are most likely to be found in this category, in their bid to stay relevant.

So, many of us have some type of wall that we've grown accustomed to, and we even go as far as attaching some level of importance to it. Talking about physical walls; nobody builds walls strictly for decoration purposes. No one! We all build walls to cave our insecurities in and when they no longer can be contained, it eats us alive, whole.

The Wall We Build Around Us!

There's one of my favorite quotes, and it goes thus;

"The walls we build around us to keep sadness out also keeps out the joy."
----Jim Rohn

I want to be as realistic as possible in my explanation and I will use both the physical walls and the unseen walls to prove this one basic fact. So, for physical walls, I have seen some buildings in my area and the walls they build as tall as anything. I find it ridiculous though because, to me, walls are supposed to be some form of demarcation and not some solitary confinement type of lifestyle. Some even make use of electrical barriers all-around their fence perimeter, make use of top security locks- not one, and not two. And sometimes I will question myself that why do we go this insane mile because we feel unsafe?

Fine! let's all assume it was sufficient to keep you safe, but what happens when some disaster erupts from within? like a burning building, a sudden pipeline explosion that suddenly caused damage to your buildings and you needed so badly to get out? It's at that point you will truly know what it means to be trapped by the same things we believe will keep us safe. And that's just one of the many typical illustrations for physical walls.

Delving right into the possibilities with unseen walls we build for ourselves. Many times, people do not know we are currently experiencing bad episodes, and there's no way to know because you are always feigning strength. And while feigning strength can be a good thing, it's best to reach out whenever we feel the need for someone to reach out and grab us when falling. It's true there just so many bad people in the world. Men and women who commit so many devilish atrocities on a daily. However, good people still exist, and you just have to pay enough attention to find those that are good and best for you.

Just like it is for insanely built physical walls, you can be in true need but the unseen walls you've built simply silences any plead for help you try to make, and at the end of the day you found yourself losing more than you are winning. Sometimes, it can even cost precious lives; people die just because they were not able to escape the confines of their walls on time. One of the many reasons why suicide is desperately on the rise.

Get The Point!

In retrospect, I am not against building walls, not at all! However, we should always factor in our escape route when building those walls. Exercise caution and be moderate as possible so our safe spots do not turn into a death trap. Yeah, moderation is required in all you do. Please, remember that!

Finally, walls can be anything- not just structures made out of pieces of concrete blocks or bricks.

Interesting article. I think there are different dimensions and how we see walls. There are some walls that we build which hinder our Success and some help us to succeed. Depending on the type of wall we built at the end of the day though

You are right...there are walls we build which hinders success and some helps us to succeed. However, wall doesn't have polarity. And because building a wall most times comes with unpredictable outcome, we must exercise moderation. We need to make sure it doesn't suffocate us..we need to make sure it's not at the expense of true living. I tell you, so many people are rather existing than living simply by virtue of the walls built to cave them in. Walls has no polarity but time will tell at the end of the day if we made the right decision or the best decision. Thanks for taking time to read through @mandate

This is really interesting , the way each and everyone see or define wall really matters .

Thanks for shearing

I'm glad it interest you. There are still so much we can talk about when it comes to wall. And like you rightly said, the way each and everyone see or define wall matters. However, even those rightly erected walls (I mean, those done with good intentions) might still pose a problem later.

Your best bet is to exercise caution and be moderate as possible so our safe spots do not turn into a death trap.
