Plant physiology is presented as a captivating discipline that delves into the complex mechanisms that give life to plants, from the molecular level to the organism as a whole, this branch of botany is responsible for studying the physical and chemical processes that sustain the internal functioning of plants, from the absorption of water and nutrients to photosynthesis, growth and reproduction.

When talking about processes in the previous chapter it is necessary to understand that process is a continuous and natural sequence of events in living plants, such as photosynthesis, respiration, translocation, opening and closing of stomata, flowering and seed formation. This plant discipline helps us to understand the function of plants in the ecosystem where it develops. In essence, plant physiology seeks to understand how plants interact with their environment and how they respond to environmental stimuli. Covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • Plant nutrition: Investigates how plants absorb, transport and use the nutrients essential for their development.
  • Photosynthesis: Unravels the mechanisms of photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert solar energy into chemical energy.
  • Plant respiration - Examines how plants breathe, using oxygen to break down sugars and release energy.
  • Growth and Development: Studies the processes that regulate the growth and differentiation of plant cells, tissues and organs.
  • Plant reproduction: Explores the mechanisms of sexual and asexual reproduction in plants.
  • Ecophysiology: It analyzes how plants adapt and respond to environmental conditions, such as light, water, temperature and stress.
In the same way, plant physiology has a fundamental role in various areas, such as agriculture, horticulture, forestry and ecology and helps us to improve crop production, since, by understanding the physiological processes of plants, scientists can develop strategies to optimize the growth, yield and disease resistance of crops, conserve ecosystems because plant physiology helps to understand how plants interact with their environment, this is crucial for the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity and the development of new products because plant physiology knowledge is used to develop new plant products, such as biofuels, medicines and biodegradable materials.

In short, plant physiology is a fascinating and fundamental science for understanding the natural world. By unraveling the mysteries of the inner workings of plants, this discipline opens up endless possibilities for improving agriculture, conserving the environment and developing new technologies.
