If you have ever had to convince your partner to see a movie with you instead of the one he had chosen or if you have been able to convince your pretty kids to have a cup of chocolate instead of ice cream, or convince a group to friend to eat Noodles instead of Pizza, then I have to let you know that you have the potential of becoming a sales person.
I have so many friends who will never want to be a sales person even for one second, the name salesperson to them is a lot of task on its own but what they fail to understand is that almost everyone does the job of a sales person in one way or the other, by trying to convince someone to do a thing or the other in your favour is an example of selling your ideas, thoughts, feelings, needs, and expectation to them.
Before the wide spread of social media and online markets, sales people usually move from door to door and from offices to offices to showcase the products they have to offer to buyers. When the internet became a big market, things become worse for the innocent sales people who were trying to make a living because people now wanted to order online. In no time just after everyone thought that the position of a sales person in industries will be abandoned, different options arose and the number of sales persons we have in the world now is very large, we no longer have those who move from house to house, but we do have brokers, security dealers and industrial sales representatives who seal sales deals every day and make a constant living by doing so.
While some companies assign duties to some individuals or even department to take charge of every sale decision in the firm, there are other business organizations who does not designate any department in the company as every worker in the company is regarded as a sales person and at such the major goal of the employee no matter their department is supposed to bring sales and close sale.
The buyers we have today are sometimes much more about the product than the sales man, which means there has to be an adequate preparation from the sales man, buyers are no longer as uninformed as they use to be. Whatever sales strategy you choose to follow, you have to know that the way that is profitable to make success is that of honesty, transparency and good will. In making sales, make use of your head as well as your heart, none of them should be left without the other.
In other for a business to grow and attain success, sales is inevitable. The simple way to sell is to trigger emotions and feelings. It isn’t difficult, it is just the same way parents make their children lay their beds, it is the same way you make your friend do something for you. Humans are more emotionally connected to everything than being practical and when it comes to buying and trusting a firm or brand, emotion rules the game.
Never be insincere as it will ruin everything, work on their needs and not the product or what the business can offer. Everyone coming to you is coming for what they can profit from you and are not concerned about what you numerous offerings, they are only concerned about their needs which is what you should lay emphasis on.
Everyone is a business person even when the level of selling may differ. Never think you not equipped to be a salesperson because every day you close a sales deal directly or indirectly.
the image you project is important, and empathy is always an important part.
You have to be nice to make jokes without offending, this is all part of the process of selling the product and yourself, because from the first moment you like the other, you are selling everything and have most of the work done.

Not every human interaction, discussion, decision is a sales activity. Toady we watch a horror movie, which is preferred by the husband. Tomorrow a romantic one for the wife. We don't sell anything, we make compromises, common decisions. Some people argue or talk only to have right, or because they like talking.
All marriages are - or should be - a compromise to maintain such win-win situations but I wouldn't say it is sales.

As far as I am concerned sales is one thing we all do either intentionally or not, just like the example you gave above, convincing our loved ones is an act of sales on its own.
