With the pandemic slowly fading into oblivion the job market situation is a very interesting one. Many workers got used to work from home and do not agree with their employers to get back into the office. This creates pressure on companies to stay competitive in their offers. On the other hand, the companies that are not keeping up are seeing a major resignation which could lead to a downwards spiral for the companies. With that being said, not everybody agrees that the remote working style is the way to go, which is what I want to discuss in this article.
Reasons Why People Are Quitting
Let’s start with looking at some reasonable arguments why people would quit their job in current times. Number one being that people want to work from home. As somebody who is currently working from home and goes to the office once in a while, I must admit that working from home has its perks. Not only are you saving the travel time but you also safe money on the gas. These are both very valid points that every employee can bring up. Furthermore, if you do not have to travel to work it is much easier to get affordable housing as you are not restricted to live close to the job. Additionally, there is the productivity side of things. Many workers report that they are far more productive at home as there are no distractions in the office. The last point only occurs if people have an office job of course.
Another valid argument to quit their current positions is that people want less work. Now do not get me wrong here, I do not think that people are getting lazy. The thing is that throughout the pandemic the work load got progressively higher with the expectation of managing it without a raise or other compensation. The reason for this is easy. In the beginning of the pandemic many people were laid off which put more work load on the remaining employees. In the beginning this situation was promised to be temporary but with more workers either quitting or getting laid off the work load just got higher. This brings the question why employees should not look for a better job with better conditions.
This brings me to the third potential reason, which is the better offers by the competitors. Many companies have realized that if they want to attract new work force, they have to stay competitive in their job offers. With raising inflation people have the demand for more money to support their lifestyles. Furthermore, several studies have shown that employees that are switching jobs every 2-3 years are more likely to earn more money than employees that are staying at one place for their entire life. This means that if a company is not trying to be more attractive to new and the current employees they could soon enter a downwards spiral where more people leave and no new people will come. Bringing this company inti default.
Last but not least we have to talk about career growth. Many employees just do not get the chance of promotion or getting to work on different projects. A lot of managers are seeing their employees as work force which are paid to do as much work as possible. They are not considering the employees as somebody that wants to develop themselves and evolve their skill set. That is why having a great team manager can help a company and employees a lot. With that being said, employees that are trying to grow in their career are constantly looking for opportunities and will therefore leave if they see that they are not getting the chances that they feel they need.
Is The Resignation Inevitable?
With the previous arguments we have to ask the question: Is the resignation inevitable? Are people going to continue quit their jobs because they want to work from home? Well, I do not think it is an easy yes or no question. I do think that companies have to stay competitive and try to offer at least some remote working in the future as the technology has proven that it definitely is working out. The thing is that not everything about remote working is all sunshine and rainbows. Especially for new employees the beginning time is much more valuable in the office. They get to meet their new co workers in person and can start networking better. This is a very overlooked point in my opinion.
Furthermore, I think that people that want to grow in their careers can not do it just from home. They have to be present in important decisions and also show that they are willing to help others out. This is only possible if you are in the office in my opinion. Not only that, but talking to another human being face to face instead of screen to screen has a much higher impact than people would like to believe. This is why I think many companies will have to find a middle ground between the remote and office work. The most important thing is that companies should keep their promises to their employees. Because if the promises are not held the employees will just continue quitting which will just continue the resignation movement.
Conclusion
To conclude this article I want to say that remote working truly has its upsides. There are no distractions, you are saving much more time and can safe some money on office food and gas. On the other hand, especially if you are a new team member, the time in the office is very valuable as the learning curve is much steeper than from home. Furthermore, I think that the networking part should not be neglected if we are talking about people that want to grow in their career. In my opinion a hybrid version with 2-3 days remotely should really do the trick and be a great compromise. What are your thoughts on this guys?

Dear @ga38jem
Interesting read. Upvoted already.
Great Resignation is surely an interesting phenomenon, which we started witnessing lately and it's clearly a result of pandemic and lockdowns. Employees and emplyers learned to work online and manage their businesses that way and many people do not seem to want to come back to idea of working from the office (very time in-efficient).
I would only expect this phenomenon to accelerate within upcoming years.
On the other hand, when I talk to my friends some of them express that they do not wish to work full time from home. Most seem to like an idea of spending one or two days (Every week) within the office. To be able to socialize with other people and change environment every now and then.
Do you have similar experience while talking about this subject with others?
That's true. However, while working from home we're using our electricity (Which is becoming so much more expensive). It's worth to remember about it.
That's what workers say. However, according to sources I've read - business owneers and project manageers often underline that productivity of such an employers (Working from hom) is much lower.
Quite an irony, isn't it?
Cheers, Piotr

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! While speaking with some collegues and friends I also heard that the hybrid model is the most favorised. I am just not sure whether it is because they mean it or just because they wanted to look good :D
Regarding the project managerss: I think the workers are more productive. The problem for project managers is that everybody works on their own schedeule and therefore it is not pulsed as it would be in the office. That means that stuff gets done just not in the same rhytm as the project manager would like to have it. I think that this could be a challenge in the future to devlop such processes which are a bit more agile.
