In this article I want to tell you about a very common problem in people who communicate orally: crutches. What are they, why do they occur and how can we correct them? Read on to learn more.

What are crutches?

When we have difficulty walking we use a support; whether it is a cane, a crutch or we take someone's arm. We need that support to walk, even if we walk slowly and awkwardly. Crutches in public speaking are repetitive words that we use to connect ideas. When we are nervous, do not know what to say or do not have a definite idea, we resort to crutches.

Why do they occur?

Crutches have several causes: nervousness, insecurity, little or no mastery of the subject, reduced vocabulary. Crutches are unnecessary for those who listen to us, in fact they can be annoying, and they also show insecurity and lack of professionalism. But what is true is that they are very relevant for us since they are a product of our difficulty to speak fluently and we rely on them to continue speaking, clumsily and slowly? yes, but, rather than stop speaking we prefer to use crutches.

There is an infinite number of crutches. Some are more common than others and vary according to the person, even depending on the region where we live. Beyond that, the most common ones are:

  • Esteeemm
  • Ehhh
  • Right?
  • Y....
  • right?
  • So
  • Well then
  • Finally.
  • Do I make myself clear?
  • You do?
  • You see
  • I mean...
  • Let's see.
  • Is that understood?
  • Ok.
  • I really do.
  • Really
  • Literally
  • Really
  • They also occur in suspension of final or initial syllables. For example: "She went to the house, didn't she? Andyyyy, I'm looking for the clothes that I had to take aaaaaaa to the hospital".

(Suspended syllables will be discussed on another occasion).

How do we eliminate them?

In order to overcome the use of crutches and speak fluently, it is necessary to recognize that we have this problem, become aware of it and find a way to overcome it. At the same time, it is necessary to identify and define which crutches we use most frequently. An ideal way to do this is to record ourselves, either on video or audio. This will allow us to evaluate ourselves and be aware of the magnitude of the failure.

I recommend the following:

  • Record yourself, either on audio or video. By recording ourselves, we become aware of the crutches we use and the unpleasantness of using them.

  • Apply pauses when speaking. Instead of saying. "Well, ehhh, I went to the market aaaa buy". Say it like this: "Well..., I went to the market... to buy".

  • A very practical and useful way to increase your vocabulary and lexicon is to learn as many connectors as possible and replace crutches with them. Instead of them, use connectors such as: "in addition", "likewise", "however", "but", "in short", "so that". (But be careful not to repeat them so much that they also end up being crutches).

  • Repeat the last word of the previous sentence. "Definitely the prices in that market are very expensive." "They are very expensive, seriously, notice that a kilo of sugar costs..."

  • Invite the listener to participate in the conversation or speech. When you do not finish linking two ideas, pause and ask the audience something that invites them to participate. Before using the crutch ask, "How are we doing so far, any questions?", "Shall we continue?", "If it's okay with you, I'll take questions at the end". That gets your audience involved and allows you to hide the forgetfulness you had at the time.

  • **Believe in yourself **. nThink positive. Convince yourself that you are a great communicator and that you do it well. That you speak fluently and without discomfort. That drives you to improve.

  • The best way to avoid crutches is to learn our speech well and practice it a lot. The more confident we are in our speech, the fewer crutches we will have. And by practicing and recording ourselves, we will see the evolution.

For me it was a real pleasure to present you this guide. I hope it will be very useful for you. Remember that you can find me on my social networks as @ gsbilbao.

Greetings dear @garybilbao undoubtedly speaking in public is a problem for many and sometimes it is these bad habits that make our nervousness increase and end up playing a bad past. Great tips that you share with us. Regards

Hello friend @garybilbao.

Very good advice to follow, the crutches are often causes of nerves at the time of having to express ourselves, the first thing we must do is to recognize the problem, try to overcome it by trusting ourselves and our abilities, but it is very good your article there we can see many of our failures.

Greetings and thanks for your support

I remember back in my school days, when even ever I was told to give a speech to the class or in a project, I got stage freight and begin to stamer, but I got over it with constant practice and determination. So anyone can easily overcome this problem if they stay focused. Thanks for this enlightening article.

otally. Practice makes perfect, as the saying goes. With discipline and a lot of exercise, I can overcome this and other problems we have to communicate. Even today I still have crutches and I keep working on it.

Thanks to you for commenting.

It's my honour.

Excellent work, it is part of many people the use of crutches to express themselves when speaking and the worst thing is when having to speak in public giving the impression of his little management in the subject they are addressing.
Allow me to take this post for someone who needs it,
thank you for your contribution

Hello @garybilbao
Very good advice. I think this is a very common problem, and although many know they have this communication problem, some are unaware of it, and it has a lot to do with nerves when speaking.
I had never read about this topic, not about how to overcome that detail when speaking, good data.

Greetings my friend. Thanks for these very useful tips, certainly crutches can be annoying for the listener and are perceived as insecurity, and eliminate them is a work of dedication that many do not take seriously, in college I could not trust a teacher who exaggerate the use of crutches and when I have had to expose projects at work I apply the advice to use different connectors, not to mention that I do not speak on a topic that I do not master, but the nerves give me away haha.

hahaha, yes, that last thing you mention is vital to take into account, not to dare to talk about a subject I don't master. The other tips are pertinent. And we have to take seriously our evolution as communicators.

Thanks for commenting.

Hello @garybilbao, although crutches are very common in many speakers, I think one of the ways to overcome it is to enrich our vocabulary, this way we will have an endless number of terms that we can use at the time deemed appropriate, of course despite having an enriched vocabulary often influence the nerves in the speaker which is something sometimes difficult to control, but as you mention, with lots of practice and discipline can be minimized.

See you later, have a great weekend.

Increasing vocabulary, learning many words will make us fill in or rather say the right words when we are looking for what to say.

About nerves, yes. They play a trick on us and even if we have practiced a lot, know a lot of words or know the best techniques, nerves sometimes betray us.

regards

this may be a very useful and very important lesson in life, in public speaking, I only read and understand the crutches, because I know you are a teacher, so I only listen to what you have shared, thank you very much.

Thank you for your visit and comment. It is really important to be aware of the crutches we use when speaking in public.

Helpful post,thank you.

Hi dear friend @garybilbao

I think I suffer from crutches, I had not thought about how to combat them until this post, I am going to record myself and work on it

god bless you

Hi @garybilbao I have heard very famous speakers have excessive crutches, there are ways to correct them, one of them is to realize that you have them and practice a lot your oratory avoiding them until your mind is trained. Another is to read to expand your vocabulary, nothing is more useful to speak well than reading a lot I assure you, thanks for such a good post.
