The Importance of Genetics in the Current Situation - Part Two

in hive-175254 •  5 years ago

A few days ago I published the first part of a series that I have wanted to bring to share information and explain in a simple way what is this about DNA and the human genome, but to see what importance has the developments in this area starting from our current problem of Pandemic.

Do you know what is the relationship between DNA and viruses or how we as humanity can benefit from this knowledge?

Keep reading and I'll explain.

For visiting my blog, thank you very much.

Welcome to my new publication.

I concluded the previous publication by saying that all our cells have the same genetic information, stored and protected within the nucleus, but it will be the function it will perform that will allow one information or another to be expressed.

For example, if a kidney cell, whose function is the selection of specific nutrients, will have a certain shape to fulfill that function, and the orders or *"blueprints" of that shape it will have are written in the genes (DNA).

The same happens with the cells of the retina, they are in charge of transforming into a nervous impulse (electric) the light that enters the eyeball, but in spite of having different forms and functions, both have the same genetic information stored.

But stored how? You may ask yourself

This is what constituted the study of the Human Genome, to determine in what form all this information was stored, what form that "cell register book " had and to determine on which specific page each and every one of the different details of our body (eye color, height, diseases, everything) were found.

Here, when talking about structures there is a great tendency for most people to get confused or find it hard to understand, to visualize it in a three-dimensional way.

But that's what this post is about, to make the complex easy, and that we can all be aware not only that this is important, but why?

Let's not just say "that's genetic," but let's say it properly. Well, the following images are a strand of DNA (and RNA, which are essentially the same thing), but let's focus on the DNA strand for now:

As you can see, it has a spiral shape, like a ladder that is held at both ends and turned in the opposite direction. But if you detail it, it's composed of different elements or units that are called nucleotides.

If we split that DNA chain in half, we can divide it into two strips, each composed of a large number of these nucleotides (subunits), in turn, these long strips we can visualize it as **a big book **, is that way in which information is stored, is that what is called DNA, and is what was studied for so many years. ? Something abstract, right?

*But let's follow the example of the book so we don't get lost. I said that this chain or large strip of DNA is the book in question, the information, for example, what color our eyes are going to be or whether we have a chance of getting a lung disease would be a fraction of this large chain - let's say it would be a page of the book - and the words and letters that are used are the nucleotides. Each specific sequence of this chain, which contains information for the creation of a specific characteristic is called a GEN. How is the digestion of this information going? Is the analogy to a book working? I hope so.

So, to finish reinforcing what I've explained so far, when someone says they're going to have a genetic test to find out what diseases they might have later on, what they do in the laboratory is go through a series of processes in a person's cell, until they release the nucleus, then the membrane that covers it to release the DNA, unwind it, and locate these specific sites where the information of a disease is stored to see if there's a possibility of it developing or not. **Interesting, don't you think?

When someone has some physical abnormality at birth, and it is genetic, for example "absence of arms ", a disease known as Phochomelia, it means that the GEN that has the information for the "formation and development " of the arms is defective...

Well, for now I'm just finishing up, hoping that this will make clear all that I have wanted to do through my words and comparisons. If we are genetically predisposed to suffer from a disease, there are possibilities that it will be expressed but also that it will not, it depends on external factors, that is to say, that in a certain way there are some genes that we can prevent from being expressed. The study of this allows that (in theory) you could go to a laboratory and choose what kind of eye color you want your child to have, the height, build, hair type, skin color, among many other characteristics, Genetic engineering takes care of this .

I'm linking this whole thing to the current pandemic, that is, the CoronaVirus". Here's a preview:
All viruses are strands of DNA (or RNA- another nucleic acid of similar structure as DNA)...

In the next post I will make the relationship between one and the other and you will notice the importance of all this knowledge in the current fight against the pandemic, as well as the role that AI plays along with genetics. Are you interested to know?

Don't stop reading me.

Grateful for the support.

I leave here the link to the first part of this series of publications.

Hi @project.hope
Thank you.
For now I think I'll be on both networks. Let's see what the definition is in the near future.
I've already started publishing on hive as well. In good measure I think most will migrate totally to hive.

Greetings dear friend @josevas217.

Brother, I congratulate you.
Your writing fascinates me. You guide us through the reading, you accompany us and I feel that you hold my hand at all times.
Are you a teacher?

I liked your previous article a lot too. I have a great affinity for genetics and love these publications.

I will be attentive to your next installment because I want to see how you relate all this to the current pandemic.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Your friend, Juan.

Hello friend @juanmolina

This subject is also something that fascinates me, but it is usually something complicated for many people, I try to make it easy to understand.

I am a nurse and a doctor, also a qualified teacher. I worked for three years as a biology teacher, it was a good experience. My whole father's family are professionals in the teaching field. Maybe that makes it easier for me to explain.
And I like to do it.

Thank you for your good words.
I'm already working on the subject of the next post. There's a lot to be said for it.

This explains many things. LOL!
I grew up watching my aunt (my second mother) studying her Bachelor of Education degree in Biology, at the Universidad de Oriente (UDO), Núcleo Sucre, Sucre State, Venezuela.

I remember when she did his experiments with those Drosophila melanogaster mosquitoes.
She used glass jars with "agar". There the "fruit mosquitoes" would reproduce.
She used gauze plugs that he impregnated with "ether" to put the mosquitoes to sleep and then she had to count the males and the females.
All this to demonstrate Mendel's laws of Genetic Inheritance.

I was a child, but I remember it clearly.

There are also educators and health professionals in my family. My mother is a graduate nurse, I have uncle doctors ...

Brother, it is a pleasure and an honor that we are friends.

Hi @josevas217!

You reminded me of the old days in high school, where we studied Mendel and concepts related to genetics, inheritance and phenotypes, genotypes, etc. One of the most difficult things to remember and to pronounce was DNA, and I don't mean the acronym but the words, to say it quickly 3 times in a row without getting your tongue stuck :D

It is a pity that this knowledge can be used not only to correct and avoid diseases and congenital defects but also to create our own destruction. I'm sure your next posts will go in that direction.

Some people say the destruction of Atlantis began with the manipulation of the human genome.

Thanks for sharing :D

It's very advantageous all that can be done with genetic friend @jadams2k18
Luckily, in my university study process, I was given classes in biochemistry by a professor specialized in that area, as well as others of a biomolecular nature. And I must say that this gentleman was feared by all, because he is very demanding as a teacher, but that implied that I studied many more, and I am really passionate about this.

But it is a lethal weapon in the hands of unscrupulous people, because they can create real disasters of world order.

Thank you very much for your comment. There was never any hatred of Atlantis, certainly more of what one does not know than what one does.

I am happy to have taken you to your adolescence, in your studies. HE HE HE

You're welcome :D

What did you study in college?

Hi @jadams2k18
First I studied nursing, then medicine, and also a degree in teaching.

Sorry. I didn't see your response.

That's great my friend! I think doctors should study nursing first to make them more humane, there are many who do not have the slightest regard for their patients.

And you're a teacher? You're super prepared for an apocalypse! :D

@tipu curate

Thank you fiend
