Labor Psychology - The "Friday Effect"

Generally, the arrival of this day represents a reason for great joy for everyone, especially for salaried workers in offices or companies. Many workers are paid weekly and the arrival of Friday represents payday.

Because of this, many employers have chosen to pay their workers another day of the week to prevent their workers from wasting their money and to reduce the rate of absence from work on weekends.

There is a feeling of "liberation" accompanied by a hint of "legality" that would allow the actions of possible debauchery in carnal pleasures and consumption of stimulant substances (such as alcohol and drugs) taken by the workers that day, to be "socially" justified, under the premise that the worker needs to de-stress from the pressures accumulated during the week.

The meetings of coworkers on Fridays, considerably affect their performance in the following days. Causing an increase in calls for attention, labor penalties, and even dismissals.

The "Friday Effect" is accompanied by both psychological and physiological manifestations.

From the beginning of the week, coexistence plans are being developed that will be carried out on Friday, which creates a feeling of expectation in the worker which accompanies them throughout the week. This expectation directly affects the state of mind, often causing collective euphoria.

The meetings of "working couples" often occur on Fridays and at the hormonal level pre-excitement alterations occur just by thinking about the arrival of the long-awaited day.

It should be noted that the negative effect on business performance is an aspect that considerably affects efficiency and is a factor of great concern for human resources managers who must deal in the best way with their employees by developing and implementing work psychology methods to counteract it. without affecting the collective spirit and without creating an atmosphere of harassment, where workers feel pressured or singled out.

I think another reason behind Friday effect for employers also has to do with that sense of free period or free time in which the labourers can fully utilize in their weekends.

Even students get this same excitement whenever it's Friday because they have more free period or time over the weekend till another Monday morning.

Exactly, everything is related to free time and the feeling of freedom.

But, the poor use of that free time can affect the physical, family, and psychological health of workers, which affects the performance of productivity at work.

The psychological effect of weekends, for Latin American workers is very marked, since as you mention, from Monday they are already planning what to do on Friday, parties, excursions, any kind of celebration sets the tone. That's right, maybe if payments were made in the middle of the week or maybe on Mondays, absences would decrease on weekends and generally.

Payday is the happiness day , all the workers get happy on payday. When they are paid they will bring happiness to their families by bringing food and other items that are needed for their daily life. Thats why company pays them weekly to give them motivation to work more harder.

Of course, dear friend. Payday is a day of joy.
Sharing pleasant moments with co-workers is also a necessary aspect to increase the levels of interaction and work confidence.
But, when the limits are broken is when the problems begin.

In Venezuela, we usually talk about "Little Friday", which is Thursday, the prelude to the "liberation" from the stress of work. Arriving on Thursday represents the prelude to what we have been waiting for, "the end of the week". Hehehehehe! :)
