A few days ago I was talking about the challenge for parents of a child with ADHD. In order to educate them we definitely need to ask for help from the educational institution to learn some strategies used by them to capture attention and motivate. However, the fact that the place of instruction is the home adds new variables that can help to add new variables of distraction. Organising a schedule and alternating activities were fundamental in that first article.

  • Structure activities with no more than 45 minutes: According to Dr. Miller and the experts this is known as segmentation. Time that exceeds 45 minutes will no longer bear fruit. These moments can be alternated with a snack, a relaxing activity, among other things.

  • Praise their achievements: Recognising the child's efforts is fundamental and motivating. It helps to strengthen their self-esteem and to know that they are doing well. The tone of voice used when praising is fundamental. Activating the sense of achievement motivates them and will make them want to be more attentive and dedicated to what they are doing.

  • Spend quality time: we know that most parents are also doing work from home; however, if we want to generate their attention we cannot be looking at the phone or computer while working with them. It is then a matter of generating a quality space, where the child feels that the attention is for him/her and with this, possible distractions are reduced.

  • Maintain patience: Sometimes we expect quick results and could become frustrated if we fill ourselves with expectations. It is best to recognise that children go at their own pace. It is not about forcing things, but about working in steady steps. This will also allow us to evaluate the goals and understand if the strategies used are meeting the objectives.

These recommendations will surely continue to help us educate these children, who learn so quickly and who definitely need our help. Do you know anyone who is going through something similar? I read them!
