As a business leader, you must become a diplomat. Cross-functional collaboration is key to getting things done, approving your budget and accomplishing your goals on time.

Get to know how your organization runs. A corporation or organization is like an organism. There are brains who make products and services, lungs and muscles who do physical work, nerves who are analysts and engineers and eyes which scout the market. How does your organization actually run? What are the business processes and technical steps that create products where you work? How does a customer place orders and how are customers located? Learn the maps and procedures that move the ball forward where you are.

Learn who the gatekeepers and decision makers are. In every organization there are leaders, influencers and managers. Although a manager may set the pace, leaders can be from any position in the organizaiton. Find the influences and leaders and work with them to find a way forward.

Learn to speak the language of each department. Become a chameleon, and work to learn the jargon and communcative styles of each department. Learn to be more formal or causal based on the climate and culture of the group, but stay professional.

As a leader, reach out to stakeholders, leaders and functional managers to accompish you goals. Instead of waiting for to find leaders in organizations you work with, be proactive in your search and focus on what can be done to accomplish the goal.
