Most of the time, making the most of the present moment as it is rather than trying to change it into something you think it should be, is the key to finding clarity, calm, and happiness.

And yes, Most adult minds don't naturally think that way. Let's first look at a very typical error that negative individuals make.

Those that are negative frequently take pride in calling themselves "realists." Of course, everyone with a strong belief—whether it concerns UFO experiences or totally honest politicians—thinks they are being "realistic" by holding it.

The statement about "becoming more realistic" is a favourite of cynics everywhere. And to some extent, they are right. However, negativity only affects our outcomes because it discourages us from trying, or if we do, we do so grudgingly and give up sooner. These types of prophesies do in fact come true. According to certain studies, our beliefs about our health may occasionally have a greater impact on how long we live than our actual health.

The fact that we can experience negative thoughts even when things appear to be going quite smoothly is what makes all of this so terrifying. For instance, the belief that something is "too good to last!" swiftly devastates a promising circumstance.

Ask yourself "Do I overgeneralize when something unfavourable unexpectedly occurs? Do I see it as permanent and applying to everything, or do I compartmentalise it to one location and time?"

For instance, if someone rejects you on a date, do you tell yourself "Relationships never work out for me, ever" and extend your pessimism beyond that particular person, time, and place? Do you tell yourself, "Well, I failed that exam; I'm not happy about it, but I'll study better next time" after you don't pass an exam? Or do you oversimplify it by telling yourself that you're "not intelligent enough" or "unable to learn"?

Remember that even when they occur frequently, negative thinking prevents us from seeing and experiencing happy outcomes. It seems as though a particular mental filter only allows information that supports the "negative bias" to pass, blocking out all the positives. So make an effort to recognise yourself now.

To live a happier life, it's crucial to be able to discriminate between what you think to be bad things happening in your life and what actually occurs.

The basic line is that you always have more power over your situation than it does. Only a small portion of your life is determined by events that you have no control over; the great bulk of your life is determined by your reactions.
