It's all about keeping things in context. Thanking / congratulating not just the person but the person in relationship to what they accomplished keeps it in perspective. This is especially important for children. Not just saying "I'm so proud of you." But something like "I'm so proud of you for sticking with that task today. I know it was challenging but I'm proud of you for sticking with it."
