Exports of smartphones worldwide dropped by 11% in the first quarter of last year, led by Chinese brands Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, according to a recent report by market research firm Canalys. Shipping dropped to 311 million from 347 million in the first three months of 2021.
"The Chinese market has caused almost half of the global decline, mainly due to seasonal weakness," analyst Toby Zhu said in a statement.
Samsung ranks 1st, shipping 73.7 million units, down 4% year-on-year. Apple is pleased with the high demand for the iPhone 13 series with the new iPhone SE, which has acquired 8% to 56.5 million units, Canalys said. It was the only member of the top five providers to have the highest sales - Xiaomi (-20%), OPPO (-27%), and in vivo (-30%), ranked third to fifth, all losing ground in the first quarter.
Lockdown closure in China weighs in on China this quarter. "Strong epidemic control policy has led to the closure of major cities in China, which has created a market for consumers in the short term," Zhu said. "In addition, disruptions in parts production and consumption will affect the export of large quantities (second quarter), both in China and around the world."
"North America is the only region that has grown this quarter, demonstrating the potential of the consumer market," said analyst Runar Bjørhovde. "While its strong performance is largely driven by the demand for Apple's Apple 13 series and the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S22 family, vendors such as Lenovo, TCL, and Google have continued to make commendable efforts, taking over portable portfolios owned by LG."
"Inflation, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the COVID-19 restrictions, and the disruption of supply will affect all levels of operation and planning," Bjorhovde said.
Leading retailers will take this break to strengthen relationships with supply chain partners and their product and channel capacity to capture the growing demand in the second half of 2022. "
