This Mortal Coil - The Jeweller

Back in college and for a bit after, there was a radio show on Sunday nights called Big Sonic Heaven. They played all sorts of laid back indie music: dreampop, shoegazer, trip hop, etc. I used to lay in bed and listen to it as I fell asleep.

The show itself was unusual, because they played music that wasn't normally on the radio. And this wasn't a college or lo fi station. It was an actual, money making, commercial radio station. How the DJ got away with playing music he actually wanted to play, I'm not sure. But over time he built a loyal following, started putting on concerts, and hosted a weekly night at a local club.

One particular night, the DJ played the entirety of This Mortal Coil's Filigree and Shadow album, from start to finish. Apparently it was one of his favorite albums and was important in forming his musical tastes. So not only was he playing non-commercial music, but he played music that was important to him, and he was playing an entire album on the radio. This is what radio should be. People who love music, sharing it with other people.

So now, whenever I hear my favorite song from that album, I think of laying in bed, falling asleep, listening to Big Sonic Heaven, in preparation for the week to come.
