Hello friends!!!.
I am @mar-tha from Nigeria, I'm so happy today to share my view on this week contest organised by @abdullahw2, I'm new here, pardon me, if I did not follow the protocols very well.

Who is an unknown historical figure that you think deserves more recognition?

The unknown historical figure that I think he/she deserves more recognition in my country Nigeria is Mr. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi is indeed unsung hero in Nigerian history. He's the person that designed the Nigerian national flag, and later tagged as "Mr flag Man" because of his brilliant efforts and highly skilled in designing the flag.

What were his/her contributions, and how did they change history?

Well, In 1959, Mr Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, he was just a 23-year-old student at that time, who won a national competition to design a new flag for Nigeria, which was then on the verge of gaining independence from British colonial rule.

His designs featuring a green-white-green tricolor, was chosen from among over 2,000 contestant, Akinkunmi design portrayed an iconic symbol of Nigerian identity and national pride.

Despite this innovation and significant contribution to the Nigerian history, Akinkunmi remained relatively unknown until recent years, when his story began to gain more attention from the audience.

Then in 2014, he was given a national honored award and which is the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) award, and in 2020, he received a lifetime pension from the federal Republic of Nigeria.

Do you think it is important to aware upcoming generations about the contributions of heroes of history?

Akinkunmi's story serves as a great reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of unsung heroes who have shaped Nigeria's history.

And I think it is very significant to create more sense of awareness to our upcoming generations concerning their profound impacts on the Nigeria society, so that they will emulate the good characters and make amends where the past heroes have fallen. As such it will help to build a better society, because history is not just to discuss about past events but to learn and improve where necessary.

If you could meet this person today, what would you ask them?

If I could meet Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi Today, I would be glad to ask him the following questions:

  • What really inspired you on designing this particular mode of Nigerian flag and did you envision it would become such an iconic symbol of national identity?.

  • Sir Can you share with me any unending experiences or challenges you've faced during the design competition in 1959?.

  • Sir Akinkunmi, How did you feel to see your design being raised for the first time on Independence Day, October 1st 1960?.

  • Lastly, Looking back Sir, how do you think your design has impacted Nigerian society historical and culturally?.

These questions has been on my mind way before coming across this very contest, but if I would have the opportunity to ask him these questions, I will boldly stand before him like a trained journalist to do so, and that would make me gain more understanding for an upcoming generations.

That's all from my own ends, I would love to invite @okere-blessing, @goodybest and @josepha to also share their views.
