My Contest; It is okay to dream big dreams.
In a small colourful classroom filled with many beautiful charts, teaching aids, and vibrant arts of children aged 4,a group of children stood proudly dressed as they wanted to be addressed in the future. It was the grand finale of our preschool thematic curriculum on occupation for the term and my kids were simply at joy dreaming big dreams.
There was one who aspired to be a construction engineer, two lawyers who explained their wish to fight for justice, two nurses and two surgeons whose wishes were to save lives dedicatedly and three pilots who were going to fly me to different places as much as I wanted. I was literally beaming with joy and pride at each learner in my care.
Then I asked them intentionally with a warm smile (since we had learned about different occupations in the course of the term), Why do you want to be these things? And many hands shot up in the air.
The engineer personnel promised to build me giant houses, fine roads (i quote) and make more toy cars. Also, the first nurse said she wanted to give lots of injections to make people feel better. Another said she wanted to make sure nobody dies around her.
One of the pilots added with excitement that he wanted to fly planes so that he would take me everywhere (round the world he meant). The surgeons spoke up concuring that they wanted to make sick people feel a lot better. The lawyer said he would make sure every one who came to him would be treated right.
The class buzzed with lots of dreams from big to small and more stories of what mummy and daddy said about each occupation. I swelled with love and more pride as I listened to their chatter and quickly encouraged them to keep dreaming bigger dreams, reminding them that big dreams are like stars, they may look so far away, but each was achievable through God and their efforts as well.
I also seized the opportunity to remind them that they must take counting, reciting and writing of numbers and letter sounds seriously as well as their cultural subjects if they really want to be so big when they grow up
We quickly rounded up our circle time with a Barney song (Oh we are flying in an airplane) being played on the TV as we took turns to announce each of our dream professions. This was just the beginning of an enjoyable day ahead, as we had to meet up with others preschool classes for the party proper.
It was really exciting and fun filled!
