Today, I decided to share with you all a native meal called Onunu (pounded yam, palm oil and ripe plantain) eaten with native stew.
This meal called Onunu is a delicacy served at traditional ceremonies amongst the Kalabari in South-south (River State Nigeria).

This dish is simply yam that is pounded with boiled ripe plantain and palm oil.
Onunu is rich and it is being prepared with simple ingredients and the major ones are; yam and ripe plantain.

I will share the ingredients used in preparing this delicacy and the step-by-step preparation method. It is very simple to prepare, just keep calm and follow my method.

Ingredients Used

  • Yam
  • Palm oil
  • Ripe plantain
  • Salt
  • Onions
  • Fresh tomatoes
  • Fresh pepper
  • Maggi
  • Fish

Now, follow the steps below to prepare onunu delicacy in batches;

Part 1: Native Stew Preparation

Native stew is very easy to prepare and it doesn't take much time.

Step 1: dress, wash and cut fish into pieces and arrange it in the pot.

Step 2: add all the ingredients needed ( fresh tomatoes, blended onions, fresh pepper, maggi, salt and palm oil then cover the pot and set it to boil.

Step 3: let it cook properly before bringing it down.

Part 2: Onunu Preparation

Step 1: slice, peel and wash yam into the pot then cut plantain, wash and add to the yam and boil till it get soft.

Step 2: put palm oil and yam into mortar

Step 3: pound yam till it's smooths then add ripe plantain to it and continue pounding.

After pounding, taste the yam if it's smooth enough and then serve onunu and native stew with joy.
