Coming from the Igbo tribe on Nigeria, there are a lot of traditional meals that are associated with our tribe. The varieties are just amazing, but there is one very special one I'll write of. It is known as African salad, but we call it Abacha in Igbo.
Describe a traditional meal from your town.
Abacha (African salad)
Abacha is a type of meal that originates with the igbo tribe of Nigeria. The abacha (salad white) itself is gotten from processing cassava, dry shedded cassava makes the abacha.
It has and is still the favorite as it is so easy to prepare and the ingredients are easily assessed.
It is made with natural spices that makes it just unique and beautiful, and to mention irresistible 😋.

The color, the taste is quite amazing. It is quite attractive to the eyes so the eyes gets to eat first then the mouth. Everyone loves this meal.
It is very cheap and affordable especially for people who plant casava in the farm, but the Abacha can also be gotten in the market and it is quite affordable.
It is mostly eaten during lunch time, but most times also for dinner.
The key to making a very nice Abacha is by making sure that the ingredients and everything is very well mixed.
It is not cooked, only the abacha is soaked with hot water and later a mix of the ingredients is done.
What are the main ingredients?
The main ingredients in this Salad include:
- Abacha (Dry shedded Casava)
- Stock fish
- Black fish
- Crayfish
- Palm oil
- Nutmeg
- Edible potash
- Garden egg and garden egg leaf (for garnishing)
- Fresh tomatoes and onions (for garnishing)
Do you consider that local gastronomy is well represented in your town? Because?
Yes, there are a lot of native dishes that we enjoy here. In fact, Nigeria with its numerous tribes, different cultures and traditions, just by seeing a particular food we already know from which town it is from.
For the Igbo tribe we have our own special soups, Garri is ours, ways if cooking beans and many other local meals.
The igbo foods especially the soups are among most admired in the country.
Many people come to the east to learn our gastronomy and to get cheaper access to the ingredients used for it, they learn how to make the meals, buy the ingredients from here and go back to their lands.
Everything meal is amazing here!
It's a pleasure being able to participate here. I'm happy to share my thoughts about this nice delicacy that is peculiar to my town. I hope you liked it.

Your Abacha looks delicious!
You guys are so lucky that you can buy crayfish for a salad.
Crayfish is very expensive by us. So much that when you see it on a menu it is always marked with SQ.
SQ means that you must check the price before you order the dish as it can be very pricey.
Good luck with the contest, and thanks for the invite.
