Mallow is a beautiful flower that blooms in late summer and fall. Malva is the ancient Latin name for Mallow. Milo is a bushy perennial and sturdy stems that grow up to 4 feet. Soft green, pinnate leaves with long-blooming 5-petalled flowers in leaf axils. They are easy to care for and are not fussy about soil, any good garden soil will do. They adapt to dry conditions, but need full sun or some afternoon shade. Propagate by seed or division in early spring. Malvas are most effective when they are planted in the middle border.
We've been growing ears for several years now, and I'm still loving it. Its delicate, cane-like stems almost dance in the vase. The stems are borne in small periwinkle blue forget-me-not flowers. Although the flowers are lovely, they are short-lived, and as the petals fall, they leave behind small, bright green pearls. Flax makes an excellent textural addition to bouquets, can be used fresh or dried, and turns gold with age.
Horticulturists divide dahlias into 10 classifications, with numerous subcategories and finer distinctions. Because there are so many varieties, choosing dahlias is more difficult than growing them. However, you can put dahlias into three broad groups: large, medium with small.
Large dahlias are about 3 to 4 feet tall. The most popular dahlias in this size range are dinner plate dahlias, known for their 10- to 12-inch diameter double flowers. They are best grown behind perennial borders with other large perennials. They put on a great show in the late summer and early fall, but will need some kind of support to withstand the summer winds and rain. Try thick bamboo stays or eccentric spiral supports.
