Hello everyone, hope you all are doing great? However, welcome back to my blog.

The word computer graphics is refered to as the creation, portraying and arrangement (manipulation) of image data by the computer. This image data can be in 2D and 3D dimensions depending on the manipulation from the user. Today I will write on these dimensions.

Brief Introduction on graphics

INTRODUCTION

Recently, Computer graphics has evolved to the core technology in digital computer displays, film, video games, photography and other applications. These computer graphics has specialized hardware and software used to generate these images on devices which mostly is driven by computer graphics hardware.

Representation of Computer graphics by the computer comes in two basic kinds which include

  • Raster graphics: Raster images are known as BITMAP, it makes use of individual pixels, this pixel (unit of an image) can be of different colors and shades when merged form a whole image. Raster images are resolution dependent, relatively large in file size, and has file format of .Gif, .jpg, .tiff and .png and example of such is photography

  • Vector graphics: Vector images are created using a sequence of mathematical statement and commands where lines and shapes are placed in either 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional space. Vector images are resolution independent, relatively small in file size and has a file format of .ai, .cdr, .reps and .svg and example of such is scanned image.

Understanding 2D and 3D dimensions in computer graphics

what is a 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional image?

A 2-dimensional image is a "flat plane image ", and a flat plane or shape is two-dimensional which are represented in X and Y axis, it only has a length and width and no depth. Such images can be text, geometric models and digital shape etc. These shapes can only be rotated in a plane. 2D computer graphics are mostly used in applications that were developed originally on just traditional drawing and printing technologies, such as typography, technical drawing, advertising and cartography.

Importance of 2-dimension in computer graphics

  • 2-dimentional graphics are important in designing early video games such as board games and cards like chess, solitaire, mahjongg, etc.

  • 2-dimensional graphics has less cost in terms of production, it also saves time making it easier to produce.

A 3-dimensional image or picture that is a solid image which is measured in three different directions of height, width and depth, it is represented in three axis of X, Y, Z. The Z axis allows rotation, translation and scaling. 3-D images makes users feel involved with the scene, it offers interactivity and this experience is termed virtual reality. 3D Computer graphics are normally used in industries like animation, gaming, architecture, interior design and film.

Importance of 3-dimension in computer graphics

  • 3-dimensional graphics are important in portraying real-world images, drafting and simulation of animated images and also in entertainment.

  • 3-dimensional graphics are important in real time rendering because it shows as much information as possible as the eye can easily process within seconds

**Some difference between 2D and 3D dimensions in Computer graphics**

2-dimensional3-dimensional
1. The creation, display and manipulation of objects in the computer is in two dimension and is represented in two coordinates of X, Ythe creation, display and manipulation of objects in the computer is in three dimensions and is represented in three coordinates of X, Y and Z.
----------------------------
2. It has only two surfaces of breadth and length without depthit has three surfaces of length, width and depth
-----------------------------
3. It does not make users feel involved in the scene that is it does not offer virtual reality experienceIt does make users feel involved in the scene and offer virtual reality experience.

CONCLUSION
2-dimensional computer graphics provides a realistic, but flat view of movement on the screen and are widely used in video games and animation and the 3-dimensional Computer graphics provided interactivity which makes users feel involved and notice movement of light and shadows also gains understanding what is displayed on the screen.
